Heart of England NHS Foundation Trust (HEFT) was one of the largest organisations running NHS hospitals in England. [1] The hospitals and services run by HEFT included Heartlands Hospital, Solihull Hospital and Community Services, Good Hope Hospital in Sutton Coldfield and Birmingham Chest Clinic. The trust was under the leadership of chair Jacqui Smith and chief executive David Rosser, who succeeded Julie Moore on 1 September 2018.

In September 2016 HEFT announced plans to merge with the University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust. [2] The merger took place on 1 April 2018. The combined organisation will have a turnover of £1.6bn and 2,700 beds across four main hospitals. [3]

History

The Trust's history can be traced back to the opening of Little Bromwich Hospital in June 1895, which was a fever hospital and sanatorium in Yardley. In April 1963 it merged with Yardley Green hospitals to become East Birmingham District General Hospital, before going on to acquire the Marston Green Maternity Hospital. It became the first acute trust in Birmingham in April 1992. [1]

In July 2013 the Care Quality Commission announced [4] that Heart of England would be one of the Trusts to be inspected by Professor Sir Mike Richards under the new inspection regime.

In December 2013 the Trust was one of thirteen hospital trusts named by Dr Foster Intelligence as having higher than expected mortality indicator scores for the period April 2012 to March 2013 in their Hospital Guide 2013. [5]

In April 2014 it was announced that Les Lawrence had been appointed as the new chairman following a competitive interview process to succeed Lord Hunt who was to retire in May. He had been a non-executive director for more than two years, and was previously the cabinet member for children, young people and families at Birmingham City Council He had also chaired both the Royal Orthopaedic Hospital NHS Foundation Trust and the Alexandra Hospital in Redditch. Chief Executive Dr Mark Newbold resigned in November 2014 after the trust had a condition placed on its licence by Monitor on 24 October relating to poor performance on waiting times and mortality. He said that overcrowding of the hospitals was the main problem which he had not solved. [7]

The trust was one of 26 responsible for half of the national growth in patients waiting more than four hours in accident and emergency over the 2014/5 winter. [8]

It reported a deficit of £35.9 million accrued in the period from April to October 2015. Spending on clinical staff had increased by 10% and on nursing staff by 11% once Dame Julie Moore and Jacqui Smith, ex-chief executive and chair respectively of University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust took over the leadership of the trust. [9] In February 2016 it was expecting a deficit of £59 million for the year. [10]

In March 2016 the Trust was rated as having a poor reporting culture in the Learning from Mistakes League. [11]

Founded in 2001 and awarded Foundation status in 2004, the trust covers Sheffield's two major adult hospitals, the Northern General Hospital and the Royal Hallamshire Hospital, as well as the specialised Charles Clifford Dental, Jessop Wing and Weston Park hospitals. The chief executive of the trust is Kirsten Major, and the medical director is Dr David Hughes.

The Princess Alexandra Hospital NHS Trust serves a population of 258,000 and provides healthcare services to the communities of Harlow and the surrounding areas. It runs Princess Alexandra Hospital in Harlow, Essex, England which is a 419 bedded District General Hospital providing acute and specialist services to a local population of 258,000 people. It has been led since May 2017 by Lance McCarthy and Steve Clarke (Chairman). It has a hospital radio station, Harlow Hospital Radio.

Medway NHS Trust is an NHS foundation trust based in Kent which runs Medway Maritime Hospital.

Wirral University Teaching Hospital NHS Foundation Trust (WUTH) is an NHS Foundation Trust. It provides healthcare for people of the Wirral Peninsula and the surrounding areas of North West England and North Wales.

The Royal Wolverhampton NHS Trust runs New Cross Hospital and West Park Rehabilitation Hospital in Wolverhampton and Cannock Chase Hospital in Cannock.

Aintree University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust was a British public sector healthcare provider responsible for managing the Aintree University Hospital in Fazakerley, Liverpool, England.

Hinchingbrooke Hospital Hospital in England

Hinchingbrooke Hospital is a small district general hospital in Hinchingbrooke near Huntingdon, Cambridgeshire. Opened in 1983, it serves the Huntingdonshire area, and has a range of specialities as well as an Accident and Emergency. The hospital is managed by the North West Anglia NHS Foundation Trust.

Healthcare in the city of Bristol, England and the surrounding area is largely provided by the National Health Service (NHS), through the Bristol, North Somerset and South Gloucestershire clinical commissioning group. Facilities include a large teaching hospital – Bristol Royal Infirmary – which offers nationally commissioned specialist cardiac, cancer and children's services from its city-centre campus to patients in the southwest of England and beyond.

Western Sussex Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust NHS agency which runs several hospitals

Western Sussex Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust was an NHS foundation trust which ran Worthing Hospital, Southlands Hospital in Shoreham-by-Sea and St Richard's Hospital in Chichester, West Sussex, England and served a population of around 450,000 people across a catchment area covering most of West Sussex. It was formed through a merger in 2009 and started with a substantial inherited deficit, mortality issues and poor performance.

West Hertfordshire Hospitals NHS Trust runs three National Health Services hospitals: Watford General Hospital, St Albans City Hospital and Hemel Hempstead Hospital, in Hertfordshire, England. It provides "acute healthcare services to a core catchment population of approximately half a million people living in west Hertfordshire and the surrounding area". The Trust also "serves people living in North London, Bedfordshire, Buckinghamshire and East Hertfordshire".

East Sussex Healthcare NHS Trust is an NHS trust which runs Conquest Hospital in St Leonards-on-Sea, Eastbourne District General Hospital, Bexhill Hospital, all in East Sussex, England.

North Cumbria University Hospitals NHS Trust was created in April 2001 by merging Carlisle Hospitals NHS Trust and West Cumbria Healthcare NHS Trust. It ran Cumberland Infirmary in Carlisle, Cumbria, the birthing unit at Penrith Hospital and West Cumberland Hospital in Whitehaven, England. In January 2012, the Trust decided that its preferred future was as part of Northumbria Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust but in 2018 it proposed to merge with Cumbria Partnership NHS Foundation Trust. The merger took place in October 2019. The new organisation is called North Cumbria Integrated Care NHS Foundation Trust.

Mid Essex Hospital Services NHS Trust was an NHS trust which ran Broomfield Hospital in Chelmsford, St Peter's Hospital in Maldon, St Michael's Hospital in Braintree and formerly St John's Hospital in Chelmsford until its closure in 2010.

Healthcare in Sussex was the responsibility of seven Clinical Commissioning Groups covering: Brighton and Hove; Coastal West Sussex; Horsham and Mid Sussex; Crawley; Eastbourne Hailsham and Seaford; Hastings and Rother; High Weald; and Lewes-Havens from 2013 to 2020. From April 2020 they will be merged into three covering East Sussex, West Sussex, and Brighton and Hove.

Healthcare in the West Midlands is now the responsibility of five clinical commissioning groups (CCG): Birmingham and Solihull; Sandwell and West Birmingham; Dudley; Wolverhampton; and Walsall.

Healthcare in Surrey was the responsibility of 5 Clinical Commissioning Groups: East Surrey, North West Surrey, Surrey Downs, Guildford and Waverley, and Surrey Heath from 2013 to 2020 when East Surrey, North West Surrey, Surrey Downs, Guildford and Waverley merged to form Surrey Heartlands CCG. the new organisation started with a £62 million deficit.

Healthcare in Shropshire is now the responsibility of two clinical commissioning groups: Shropshire, and Telford and Wrekin
