Heegan FC (formerly Somali Police FC until 2013) [1] is a Somali football club based in Horseed, a district of Merca.

History

The club was founded in the Port of Merca in 1950 by descendants of Italian colonists in Merca [2] during the ONU mandate.

They have won the Somalia League in its inaugural year in 1967, [3] and again in 2014/15.

The team is based in the rebuilt Banadir Stadium.

Ali Maow Maalin was a Somali hospital cook and health worker from Merca who is the last person known to have been infected with naturally occurring Variola minor smallpox. He was diagnosed with the disease in October 1977 and made a full recovery. Although he had many contacts, none of them developed the disease, and an aggressive containment campaign was successful in preventing an outbreak. Smallpox was declared to have been eradicated globally by the World Health Organization (WHO) two years later. Maalin was subsequently involved in the successful poliomyelitis eradication campaign in Somalia, and he died of malaria while carrying out polio vaccinations after the re-emergence of the poliovirus in 2013.

Col Mohamed Ahmed Alim, who started the Somali Armed Forces Sports Directorate recruiting from the ranks of the Army. It is a seven-time champion of the Somalia League. A team of Somali Armed Forces, Horseed SC was among the most formidable and recognized football clubs in the country. After the civil war broke out, it discontinued operations, but has been revived in 2013 by Gen Dahir Aden Elmi Commander of the Somalia Armed Forces. Gen Elmi revived all the different teams of Horseed Sports Club with emphasis on the Football Team which again began to compete in the Somalia Serie A league. In 2017, Col Ahmed Mohamed Hassan, was appointed as its chairman, and since then the club has seen positive changes and developments which have catapulted the club to regain its former glory.

Mogadishu City Club is a professional football club based in Mogadishu, Somalia. They play at Mogadishu Stadium, it is one of the most successful football clubs in the country. The club plays with Elman FC in the Mogadishu Derby. Formerly known as Banadir Sports Club, in 2019, the club was renamed to Mogadishu City Club. In 2019, Mohamed Mistri Lamjed is named the new manager of Mogadishu City Club.
