Helena Merten (born 17 March 1995 [1] ) is an Australian high diver and acrobatic performer. She placed second at the 2017 Red Bull Cliff Diving World Series and won a silver medal in women's 20m at the FINA High Diving World Cup 2016.

Early life and education

Merten is originally from the Gold Coast, Australia. From the age of 5, Merten trained in various acrobatic sports including gymnastics, tumbling, diving, and circus. [2] She attended A.B. Paterson College. [3]

Career

At age 17, Merten moved abroad to join the cast of The House of Dancing Water, a water-based acrobatic show in Macau. [2] She performed with the show for two years and began cliff diving in 2015. [4]

When Merten joined the 2016 Red Bull Cliff Diving World Series as a season regular, she became the youngest diver to compete in the series' permanent line up at age 21. [2] After the first five dives of the seven-dive season, she was ranked fourth overall. [5] After placing second in the final stop of the season, Merten placed fourth in the series. [6] She placed second in women's 20m at the FINA High Diving World Cup 2016, with 229.60 points, behind Lysanne Richard's 253.80 points. [7] [8]

Merten placed second overall in the 2017 Red Bull Cliff Diving World Series, behind fellow Australian Rhiannan Iffland, and had four podium finishes that season. [9] She placed seventh in women's high diving at the 2017 World Aquatics Championships [10] and eight at the 2017 FINA High Diving World Cup. [11] Since 2017, Merten has been playing the Running Woman in the touring production of Cirque du Soleil's Luzia . [12] The role involves hoop diving and a Chinese pole. [13]

She was not able to represent Canada at the 2017 World Aquatics Championships as she had to withdraw from the competition after sustaining a neck injury.

Cassiel Emmanuel Rousseau is an Australian diver. He competed in the 2020 Summer Olympics in the men's 10 metre platform, and the 2024 Summer Olympics in the men's 10 metre platform and men's synchronised 10 metre platform, the latter with Domonic Bedggood. Rousseau claimed gold in the men's 10m platform World Championships event in Fukuoka 2023, creating history for the Australian diving team by becoming the first Australian men's 10m platform world champion.

The Abu Dhabi Aquatics Festival was a FINA-organized international aquatics competition spanning the disciplines of open water swimming, diving, and high diving, which took place from 15 to 20 December 2021 on Yas Island in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates. It was held correspondent to the 2021 FINA World Short Course Swimming Championships. The festival was the first time competitions in the three disciplines are being conducted at the same time as and in conjunction with a FINA World Short Course Swimming Championships. In addition to sporting competitions, an interactive village is being provided for festival attendees. Coverage of the aquatics festival on television and via online streaming was provided on six continents with news agencies including ESPN (Americas), SuperSport (Africa), and beIN Sports (Asia) providing international coverage of the high diving competitions.

Aidan Heslop is a British diver and high diver who competes internationally representing Wales and Great Britain. In 2024 he won gold in the men's high dive at the 2024 World Aquatics Championships.

Cătălin-Petru Preda is a Romanian diver and high diver. He was the first man to win a silver medal in a high diving event at a LEN European Aquatics Championships, winning the silver medal in the 27-metre high dive at the 2022 European Aquatics Championships.
