Helene Young is an Australian author of seven romantic suspense novels. [1] [2] [3]

Career

Young’s debut novel Wings of Fear (formerly known as Border Watch) was published in 2010 and won the Australian Romance Readers Association (ARRA) Favourite Romantic Suspense award in 2010 [4] [2] [5] and the Romance Writers of Australia (RWA) Romantic Book of the Year in 2011. [4] [5] It is the first book in a trilogy focusing on coastal surveillance around Australia.

The second book in the series, Shattered Sky, won the RWA Romantic Book of the Year award in 2012 and was shortlisted for the Davitt Award, also in 2012. [6] [2] [7]

The final book in the series, Burning Lies, was shortlisted for Daphne du Maurier Award Mystery/Suspense in 2013 and the 2013 RWA Romantic Book of the Year. [2]

Young was voted the Australian Romance Readers Association’s favourite romantic suspense writer in 2010, 2011, 2013, 2014 and 2015. [8] [2]

She says her inspiration comes from her colleagues in the aviation industry, her personal experiences, living in regional Australia and meeting people and strong women characters. [9] [10]

Personal

In 2017, ill health cut Young's 28-year career in the aviation industry, which included being a pilot, Grade One Flight Instructor, Check and Training Captain for QantasLink and Queensland Regional Flying Manager for QantasLink. [1] [4] [11] She and her husband Graham now sail the Coral Sea on their catamaran while she continues to write. [2] [12] She also conducts writing courses for the Queensland Writers Centre and speaks at book clubs, writing and community groups, schools and libraries. [11]

In 2014, the Lambda Literary Foundation awarded Barot with the Dr. James Duggins Outstanding Mid-Career Novelist award acknowledging her as an established author, with a strong following, and the promise of future high-quality work. Barot founded the LGBTQ publishing house Bold Strokes Books in 2004. She has given many workshops on the craft of writing and in 2013, she founded the Flax Mill Creek Writers Retreat where she offers both face-to-face and online workshops to authors at all stages of development.

Carmelina Marchetta is an Australian writer and teacher. Marchetta is best known as the author of teen novels, Looking for Alibrandi, Saving Francesca and On the Jellicoe Road. She has twice been awarded the CBCA Children's Book of the Year Award: Older Readers, in 1993 and 2004. For Jellicoe Road she won the 2009 Michael L. Printz Award from the American Library Association, recognizing the year's best book for young adults.

Romance Writers of America (RWA) is an American non-profit genre writers' association founded in 1980. Its mission is to "advance the professional and common business interests of career-focused romance writers through networking and advocacy and by increasing public awareness of the romance genre." Relevant works must be themed around the development of a romantic relationship between two people, and there must be a happy ending. As well as published authors, those with complete but unpublished manuscripts are eligible for membership.

Sylvia Day Japanese American writer

Sylvia June Day is a Japanese American writer of romance novels. She also writes under the pseudonyms S.J. Day and Livia Dare. She is a number one bestselling author in 28 countries.

Anne Frasier is a pseudonym for Theresa Weir.

RITA Award Literary award for romance fiction

The RITA Award was the most prominent award for English-language romance fiction from 1990 to 2019. It was presented by the Romance Writers of America (RWA). The purpose of the RITA Award was to promote excellence in the romance genre by recognizing outstanding published novels and novellas. It was named for the RWA's first president, Rita Clay Estrada. It was not awarded in 2020, and was replaced by the Vivian Award, awarded for the first time in 2021.

Malla Nunn is a screenwriter and author, who was born in Swaziland. Her works include the murder mystery, A Beautiful Place to Die, and Let the Dead Lie.

Monica McInerney is a best-selling Australian-born, Dublin-based writer. In 2014, 2016, 2018 and 2019 McInerney was voted into the top ten of Booktopia's 'Australia's Favourite Novelist' poll. Her 12th novel, The Trip of a Lifetime, was released in July 2017, and her books have been published in multiple countries and languages.

Irene Hannon is an American author of romance and romantic suspense novels.

Barbara Freethy is a #1 New York Times bestselling American author of women's fiction, contemporary romance and romantic suspense. She is a two-time winner of Romance Writers of America's RITA Award for Best Contemporary Single Title Romance for Daniel's Gift in 1997, and for Best Contemporary Single Title Romance for The Way Back Home in 2013. She has sold over 5 million books, with 18 books making the New York Times bestseller list. In 2014, she was named the Amazon KDP Bestselling Author of All Time.

Piper J. Drake is a Thai American author and podcast personality. She has also written as PJ Schnyder.

Gabrielle Wang is an Australian writer and illustrator for children and young adults based in Melbourne. Her writing career spans 20 years and has produced more than 20 books.

Zana Fraillon is an Australian writer of fiction for children and young adults based in Melbourne, Australia. Fraillon is known for allowing young readers to examine human rights abuses within fiction and in 2017 she won an Amnesty CILIP Honour for her book The Bone Sparrow which highlights the plight of the Rohingya people. The The Bone Sparrow has been translated to stage and is set to premier in the York Theatre Royal, York, UK, from 25 February 2022.

Shivaun Plozza is an Australian author of books for children and young adults. She also works as an editor, manuscript assessor and illustrator.
