Helmut Bester

Helmut Bester is a German economist who was a professor of economics at the Free University of Berlin until 2020. His research focuses on microeconomic theory, contract theory and industrial organisation.

Education

Bester received his diploma in economics from the University of Bonn in 1979. He went on to further study at the London School of Economics and graduated with an M.Sc. in econometrics and mathematical economics in 1981. He received his Ph.D. in economics from the University of Bonn in 1984 and his habilitation in 1987. [1]

Career

Bester worked as a research assistant in economics at the University of Bonn from 1979 to 1988. The German Research Foundation then awarded him a Heisenberg fellowship, which he held until 1990, when Tilburg University appointed him to a professorship in economics. He left Tilburg for the Free University of Berlin in 1995. [1]

He worked as an associate editor for a range of academic journals, such as Econometrica , the European Economic Review and the Journal of the European Economic Association . [2] [1]

The European Economic Association and the Econometric Society elected him fellow in 2004 and 2009, respectively. [3] [4]

His research focuses on behavioral economics, experimental economics, and public economics. Andreoni is well known for his research on altruism, and in particular for coining the term warm-glow giving to describe personal gains from altruistic acts. Andreoni's research uses a mixture of economic theory, experiments, and standard analysis of survey data to explore a variety of topics including: moral decision making, time preferences, charitable giving and altruistic decisions. His research has been described as expanding “our understanding of donors and charities and our broader understanding of public goods and expenditures.”

Gilat Levy is an economist, researcher and council member. She has previously worked as a lecturer at Tel Aviv University at the Berglas School of Economics. Levy also held a role at Princeton as a Visiting Fellow prior to her arrival at the London School of Economics in 2008 as a full-time professor.

Kiminori Matsuyama is a Japanese economist. Vincent P. Crawford is an American economist. He is a senior research fellow at the University of Oxford, following his tenure as Drummond Professor of Political Economy from 2010 to 2020. He is also research professor at the University of California, San Diego.

Robert Hugh Porter is an American economist and William R. Kenan, Jr. Professor of economics at Northwestern University. His research focuses on industrial organisation and auctions.

Pierre-André Chiappori is a French-Monégasque economist who is currently the E. Rowan and Barbara Steinschneider Professor of Economics at Columbia University. His research focuses on household behavior, general equilibrium and mathematical economics.
