Helsingin Kisa-Toverit (HKT) is a sports club founded in 1929 and based in Finland's capital city of Helsinki. The club have many departments and the strongest have been in basketball, track sports and field games.

The basketball HKT has been played in the national basketball league for 26 seasons, during which it won 504 to 300 match. [1] The club has won five championships in Finland in the period from 1961 to 1965, five silver and two bronze medals. [2] Also the men's basketball department of HKT has won the 1969-70 national Cup. [3] In European competitions HKT advanced to the quarterfinals of the 1963–64 FIBA European Champions Cup where the team eliminated by the Italian powerhouse Simmenthal Milano. [4] In the 1964–65 FIBA European Champions Cup HKT faced in the round of 16 the famous Real Madrid and played a great home match where the Finnish lost with a 100-109 score.

The national team of Finland that took part in the basketball tournament of 1964 Olympic Games in Tokyo had constituted five players of Helsingin Kisa-Toverit (Martti Liimo, Kari Liimo, Raimo Vartia, Pertti Laanti and Teijo Finneman).

Women

Women's basketball section of HKT has played four seasons in the first division (Naisten Korisliiga). [5] In 1967, the club's women's team won the only Finnish Championship. In 1966 HKT's women won their first championship medal, as naisjoukkue reached the Championship bronze medal. [6]

Baseball Helsingin Kisa-Toverit won two TUL's championships, in 1932 and 1935. Socially turned in one of his fastest baseball players of which, Alpo Savolainen, [7] and Ensio Vuorinen.

The Korisliiga is the top-tier professional basketball league in Finland, comprising the top 12 teams of the country. In its current format, each team plays all other teams two times in the regular season, once at home and once away, for a total of 22 regular season games. The top six teams advances continues to upper stage and the bottom six teams plays lower stage after 22 games, 5 games at home and 5 games at away versus all other teams in stage. The best two teams from lower group joins to playoffs with upper group teams. Playoffs are played best of seven format, except the quarter-finals which are played best of 5 format. Pantterit holds the record for the most league titles won, with 14. The top level Finnish league for women is the Naisten Korisliiga.

Anna Vanhatalo is a Finnish retired ice hockey and ringette player and former member of the Finnish national ice hockey team and the Finnish national ringette team. Representing Finland, she won a bronze medal in the women's ice hockey tournament at the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver. In 2004 and 2007, she won gold in the World Ringette Championships.

The U20 SM-sarja is the premier junior men’s ice hockey league in Finland. It was previously known as the A-nuorten SM-sarja during 1945 to 1991 and the Nuorten SM-liiga during 1991 to 2020. The league was founded by the Finnish Ice Hockey Association in 1945 and a Finnish Champion in men’s under-20 ice hockey has been named annually since the league’s inaugural season – with the exception of the 2019–20 season, in which the playoffs were cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Eighteen to twenty teams compete in the U20 SM-sarja regular season, which is played in a preliminary ranking stage followed by a divisional or group stage.

Kalevi Vilho Tapio ”Kallu” Tuominen was a Finnish basketball coach and player and sports executive, who also played handball and football at the national top-tier level as well as practiced many other sports. He worked as the overall head coach of Finnish Olympic Committee between 1969 and 1992. In basketball, the 174-centimetre-tall Jantunen played his whole SM-sarja career for Tampereen Pyrintö and also coached the team between 1960 and 1964. He was capped 11 times as a player and was a long-time head coach of Finland men's national team in its peak era. During Tuominen's coaching years 1955–1969 Finland qualified for 1964 Summer Olympics in Tokyo, where it placed 11th, and played in seven EuroBaskets. In EuroBasket 1967 arranged in Finland, the host team placed sixth, which is still in 2016 Finland's best position in EuroBasket. Finland women's national basketball team placed 11th with Tuominen's guidance in EuroBasket 1956 Women. He worked also as a FIBA-licensed referee. Tuominen was inducted to Finnish Basketball Hall of Fame as one of its first members in 2009. Pyrintö has retired Tuominen's jersey but allows players to use his number 15.

Satu Kiipeli is a Finnish retired ice hockey defenseman and assistant coach of Oulun Kärpät in the Naisten Liiga (NSML). During her career with the Finnish national team, she represented Finland in the women's ice hockey tournament at the 2006 Winter Olympics in Turin and at the IIHF Women's World Championships in 2001 and 2005.
