Hendrik (Henk) Oosterhuis was a Dutch trade unionist and politician who represented the Labour Party and its predecessor the Social Democratic Workers' Party. Originally from Groningen,Oosterhuis served in the Senate from 1946 until 1960 and held numerous positions within the labour movement,including Chair of the Dutch Confederation of Trade Unions (NVV) and President of the Trade Union Advisory Committee to the OECD (TUAC). Trade unions in the United Kingdom emerged in the early 19th century,but faced punitive laws that sharply limited their activities. They began political activity in the late 19th century and formed an alliance with the Liberal Party in the early 20th century. The Trades and Labor Congress of Canada was a Canada-wide central federation of trade unions from 1886 to 1956. It was founded at the initiative of the Toronto Trades and Labour Council and the Knights of Labor. It was the third attempt at a national labour federation to be formed in Canada:it succeeded the Canadian Labour Union which existed from 1873 to 1877 and the Canadian Labour Congress which held only one conference in 1881.
