Henry Andrade

Henry Manuel Andrade (born April 17, 1962) is an American-Cape Verdean hurdler. One of the best hurdlers in the United States during the 1980s and early 1990s who, [1] after years of frustration in the American Olympic Trials, achieved his opportunity to compete in the Olympics by obtaining dual citizenship through his parents' ancestry [2] and representing the Cape Verde Islands in the 1996 Summer Olympics at the age of 34. [3] Unfortunately, when his olympic moment was to occur, he showed up with a severe injury [4] and was unable to make it out of the heats. Earlier in the season, he set the Cape Verde national record in the 110 hurdles 13.78 at the Modesto Relays.

A graduate of Hiram W. Johnson High School in Sacramento, California [5] he finished third in the 300 meter hurdles at the 1979 CIF California State Meet, then won the 400 metre hurdles and was second in the 110 metre hurdles at the hometown 1980 Golden West Invitational [6] where he was awarded the Maree Rodebaugh Award as the Most Inspirational Athlete [7]

Andrade ran collegiately at Southern Methodist University on a football scholarship where, as Wide receiver, he was a teammate of Eric Dickerson on their 1981 and 1982 National Championship football teams. [8] Andrade's name was mentioned in connection with the Southern Methodist University football scandal that led to the program getting the death penalty. [9] In 1983, he was also part of their National Championship Track and Field team. [10] In 1985, he became the NCAA Indoor Champion in the 55 metres hurdles. [11] Later that year, he doubled that by also winning the NCAA Men's Outdoor Track and Field Championship in the 110 metre hurdles. [12]

It has been reported that in 1987, Andrade found his way to the NFL as a strike replacement Wide Receiver for the New York Giants [13] but his name does not appear on NFL.com's historical player search. Nor does his name appear on Pro-Football-Reference.com.

In his two attempts at the 1984 and 1992 U.S. Olympic Trials, Andrade finished in 6th place at both. [14]

Andrade received a master's degree in Physical Education at Long Beach State University in 1996 and has been working as a personal trainer. [8] He remains an active Masters track and field athlete. [15] He is the manager for his nephew Jordin Andrade who has also elected to run for the Cape Verde Islands in the Olympics. [16]

The USC Track 4×110 yard relay team, for which McCullouch ran the start leg, set the world record in 1967 that remains today, as the metric 4 × 100 m relay is now the commonly contested event.

David Oliver, is the Director of Track & Field at Howard University and a retired American hurdling athlete. As a professional athlete, he competed in the 110 meter hurdles event outdoor and the 60 meter hurdles event indoors. He is the former 110 meter hurdles champion winning the gold medal at the World Championships in Moscow in 2013 with a time of 13 seconds. He won the bronze medal in the 2008 Olympic Games and won another bronze at the 2010 IAAF World Indoor Championships.

Randolph Duane Ross is an American collegiate track and field coach, and former athlete, specializing in the 110 meters hurdles. He is currently the Director of Track and Field programs for the University of Tennessee and is best known for winning the bronze medal at the 1999 World Championships in Athletics and representing the United States at the 2004 Athens Olympics. Ross also won the 1995 NCAA championship in the 110-meter hurdles, and as a 7-time All-American and 5 Time ACC champion is Clemson University's most decorated male hurdler.

David Patrick is a retired American hurdler. He ran the 400 metres hurdles in the 1992 Summer Olympics and was the second American in the final. The race was won by Kevin Young while setting the still standing current world record in the event.

He was the 2003 NCAA champion in the event and won four hurdles titles in the Pacific-10 Conference. He was the bronze medalist at the 2008 IAAF World Athletics Final and was the runner-up at the 2010 USA Outdoor Track and Field Championships. Jeffrey Issack Porter is an American track and field athlete who competes in the 110-meter hurdles. He has a personal best of 13.08 seconds for the event. He gained a spot on the American Olympic team by coming third at the 2012 United States Olympic Trials. He repeated his third place at the 2016 United States Olympic Trials to make his second Olympic team. On June 25, 2017, he announced his retirement from track and field.

Jordin Jae Andrade is a track and field hurdler representing Cape Verde at the Olympics in 2016 and 2020 and World Championships in 2017. Dr Jordin Andrade specializes in the 400-meter hurdles. He was a silver medalist in the event at 2015 NCAA Division I Outdoor Track and Field Championships.
