The San Juan Islands is an archipelago in the Pacific Northwest of the United States between the U.S. state of Washington and Vancouver Island,British Columbia,Canada. The San Juan Islands are part of Washington state,and form the core of San Juan County.

One of five general officers in the US Army at the beginning of the American Civil War,he was removed from overseeing the Department of the West because of his Southern sympathies early in the war,although he kept Missouri from joining the Confederacy. Under President Andrew Johnson,he served on the Indian Peace Commission,negotiating in several treaties before spending his retirement partly in Missouri and partly trading reminiscences with Jefferson Davis and Ulysses S. Grant in Mississippi,eventually moving to Florida afterwards,where he spent the last few years of his life.

The Samish are a Native American people who live in the U.S. state of Washington. They are a Central Coast Salish people. Through the years,they were assigned to reservations dominated by other Tribes,for instance,the Swinomish Indians of the Swinomish Reservation of Washington and the Tulalip Tribes of the Tulalip Reservation. They are also enrolled in the Samish Indian Nation,formerly known as the Samish Indian Tribe,which regained federal recognition in 1996.
Lummi Island lies at the southwest corner of Whatcom County,Washington,United States,between the mainland part of the county and offshore San Juan County. The Lummi Indian Reservation is situated on a peninsula east of the island,but it does not include Lummi Island. The island has a land area of 23.97 square kilometres and had a population of 822 as of the 2000 census. The population nearly doubles in summer when second-home owners from Canada and the U.S. arrive for the summer months.
Sehome is a neighborhood in Bellingham,Washington,United States. It was the first town on Bellingham Bay and was founded in May 1858 by coal mine manager Edmund C. Fitzhugh,who named the settlement for his father-in-law,S'Klallam chief Sehome. The townsite was originally owned by the Bellingham Bay and British Columbia Railroad,which operated the Bellingham Bay Coal Mine until it closed in 1878. The town of Sehome was amalgamated in 1891 with three other settlements into New Whatcom,which was later renamed to Bellingham.
Rosario Strait is a strait in northern Washington state,separating San Juan County and Skagit and Whatcom Counties. It extends from the Strait of Juan de Fuca about 23 kilometres (14 mi) north to the Strait of Georgia. The USGS defines its southern boundary as a line extending from Point Colville on Lopez Island to Rosario Head on Fidalgo Island,and its northern boundary as a line from Point Migley on Lummi Island to the east tip of Puffin Island and then to Point Thompson on Orcas Island. Rosario Strait runs north-south between Lopez,Decatur,Blakely,and Orcas Islands on the west,and Fidalgo,Cypress,Sinclair,and Lummi Islands on the east.
The Haro Strait is one of the main channels connecting the Strait of Georgia to the Strait of Juan de Fuca,separating Vancouver Island and the Gulf Islands in British Columbia,Canada from the San Juan Islands of Washington state in the United States.

Canoe Island is a 47-acre (19-hectare) island located in the center of the San Juan Islands,an archipelago in the U.S. state of Washington. The island is situated in Upright Channel between Shaw and Lopez Islands. Canoe Island's surface is mostly forested with second-growth cedar,fir,hemlock,and madrona,with some old-growth trees,too. Its maximum elevation is 127.7 feet. The rocky shoreline is bordered by dense forests of bull kelp.
Harbor Airlines was a commuter airline from the United States,which existed from 1971 to 2001. Based at Oak Harbor,Washington,it operated regional passenger flights in the Puget Sound area.
Elwha Rock is a submerged rock in Puget Sound. It lies in Cayou Channel just west of Orcas Island's Grindstone Harbor at a depth of 5 feet (1.5 m) mean low water.
Friends of the San Juans ("Friends") is an environmental advocacy Nonprofit based in Friday Harbor,Washington. Founded in 1979,Friends is dedicated to preservation,both locally and internationally. Its mission is "Protecting and restoring the San Juan Islands and the Salish Sea for people and nature."
Violet P. Boede was a state legislator from Orcas Island,Washington. A Democrat,she represented the 40th district in the Washington House of Representatives for six terms from 1934 to 1950. She died in 1964,at which time she was living in Eastsound. A tribute was given for her in 1965.
