Henry Ford Health is an integrated, not-for-profit health care organization in the U.S. state of Michigan. [1] Headquartered in Detroit, [4] Henry Ford Health is the second-largest health system in Michigan, operating 15 hospitals across the Detroit, Flint, and Jackson areas. [5] Henry Ford established the health system in 1915, and it is currently run by a 15-member board of directors. [6] [1] Henry Ford Health also owns the health insurance company Health Alliance Plan. History

In March 2012, Henry Ford Health System closed its hospital in Warren, Michigan. [8]

Henry Ford Health System announced in March 2022 that they would rebrand as Henry Ford Health, dropping the word "system" from their name to put greater emphasis on the word "health." [9]

Ascension merger

On October 18, 2023, Henry Ford Health announced plans to create a joint venture with Ascension, assuming the Metro Detroit and Flint operations of Ascension Michigan. [10] [11] Under this arrangement, Ascension controls a 20% ownership and voting stake in the combined organization. The merger was finalized on September 30, 2024. [5]

Under the arrangement, hospitals formerly owned by Ascension will continue to be designated as Catholic institutions, and continue to follow Catholic healthcare guidelines, and as such will not offer abortion, birth control, tubal ligation, or gender-affirming care services. Facilities owned by Henry Ford prior to the merger will remain secular and continue to offer these services. [5]

Hospitals

The Henry Ford Health provides acute, specialty, primary and preventive care services backed by research and education. [1] Henry Ford Health directly operates ten emergency departments. All of the hospitals (except for Kingwood) operate an emergency room along with Henry Ford Health medical centers in Dearborn (Fairlane), Grosse Pointe Farms (Grosse Pointe), Plymouth, and Sterling Heights. As well as, a Henry Ford Health Center in Brownstown Charter Township (Brownstown). [12]

Ascension Michigan is a not-for-profit Catholic health system in the U.S. state of Michigan. A division of Ascension Health, it currently operates four hospitals in Southwestern Michigan, having previously operated in mid-Michigan and Metro Detroit. Prior to its acquisition by Ascension, it was headquartered in Warren, Michigan.

Beaumont Health was Southeast Michigan’s largest health care system and was headquartered in Southfield, Michigan. It merged with Spectrum Health of West Michigan in 2023 to form Corewell Health, with the headquarters of the new health system being located in Grand Rapids. At the time of its merger, the health system had a net revenue of $4.7 billion and consisted of eight hospitals with 3,375 beds, 155 outpatient sites, nearly 5,000 physicians, more than 33,000 employees and about 2,000 volunteers. The flagship hospital of the system was the Beaumont Hospital, Royal Oak, located in the Detroit suburb of Royal Oak, Michigan.

Riverside Osteopathic Hospital was an osteopathic hospital located in Trenton, Michigan. The hospital was closed in 2002. As of August 2023, the building is currently being demolished.

Craig G. Rogers, is an American urologist and the Chair of Urology Vattikuti Urology Institute at the Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit, Michigan. Rogers is known for pioneering robotic kidney surgeries using da Vinci Surgical System including single incision robotic surgeries. He was part of a team which pioneered the use of an ultrasound probe in robotic kidney surgery. On February 9, 2009, he performed the first twittered live robotic surgery.

Ascension is a large private Catholic healthcare system in the United States. Ascension had 142,000 employees, 142 hospitals, and 40 senior living facilities operating in 19 states and the District of Columbia as of the end of 2021. Ascension is the largest nonprofit and largest Catholic health system in the United States. It also operates a conglomerate of for-profit firms, including subsidiaries involved in private equity, venture capital, insurance, medical software, and pharmacy delivery. From 2014 to 2017 it co-owned a facility in the Cayman Islands.
