The Wisconsin State Assembly is the lower house of the Wisconsin Legislature. Together with the smaller Wisconsin Senate, the two constitute the legislative branch of the U.S. state of Wisconsin.

The district contains landmarks such as American Family Field, Walker's Point Historic District, the Mitchell Park Domes, and the historic Forest Home Cemetery. The district also contains the largest concentration of Hispanic residents in Wisconsin, at 45% of the district population.

As a young man, he was an enlisted volunteer in the Union Army during the American Civil War. The 1857 Wisconsin gubernatorial election was held on November 3, 1857. After incumbent Governor Coles Bashford declined to seek re-election, Republican Party candidate Alexander Randall narrowly defeated Democratic candidate James B. Cross by a margin of just 118 votes.

The district is represented by Democrat Robyn Vining, since January 2019. Vining was drawn out of the district by the 2024 redistricting act, Democrat Angelito Tenorio was elected to represent the new district beginning in January 2025.

Following the 2024 redistricting, he has announced he will run for re-election in the redrawn 61st Assembly district. He previously served 20 years on the Milwaukee Common Council and was an unsuccessful candidate for mayor of Milwaukee in 2016 and 2022.
