Hermann Voss (born 9 July 1934) [1] is a German violist, painter and puppet player. From 1975 to 2005 he taught viola and chamber music at the State University of Music and Performing Arts Stuttgart. Voss played the viola in the Melos Quartet for 40 years.

Biography

Education and orchestral activity

Voss was born in 1934 in Brünen on the Lower Rhine. He received his musical education at the Robert Schumann Hochschule at Düsseldorf and at the University of Music Freiburg with Sándor Végh and Ulrich Koch. After studying violin with Sándor Végh, he changed to viola under his new teacher Ulrich Koch. [2] Shortly thereafter, he was awarded in 1959 in Stuttgart on the viola with the 1st Prize of the German University Competition. In 1959 and 1960 Herrmann Voss attended the summer courses of the cellist Pablo Casals at Zermatt. In 1966 he again became a prizewinner of the ARD International Music Competition at Munich on the viola. From 1960 to 1967 Voss was principal violist of the Stuttgarter Kammerorchester.

Melos quartet

In 1965 he was a founding member and until the dissolution in 2005 the only violist of the Melos Quartet.

Teaching

From 1975, Voss was a lecturer in string quartet playing and from 1980 to 2005 professor of viola and chamber music at the State University of Music and Performing Arts Stuttgart. In addition, he regularly took on lectures at music festivals with masterclasses in Ratzeburg, Oberstdorf and at international masterclasses in London, Sydney and Tokyo as well as at the Academy for string quartet interpretation of the Fondation Hindemith at Blonay.

Painting and puppet theater

In addition to his work as a musician, Voss also devotes himself to a creative work by making drawings, etchings, watercolor and acrylic paintings. [3] With self-made puppet figures, masks and instruments, he regularly gives private and public performances in his own musical miniatures and pantomimes. By Voss elaborated and performed stage pieces are Festival kleiner Interpreten (Festival of small interpreters) [4] [5] and Bilder einer Vorstellung (Images of a performance). [6] [7]

Tabea Zimmermann

Tabea Zimmermann is a German violist.

The Végh Quartet was a Hungarian string quartet founded in 1940 and led by its first violinist Sándor Végh for 40 years. The quartet was based in Budapest until it departed Hungary in 1946. It is particularly known for its recordings of the Beethoven and Bartók cycles. The quartet disbanded in 1980.

Wolfgang Meyer was a German clarinetist and professor of clarinet at the Musikhochschule Karlsruhe. He worked internationally as a soloist, in chamber music ensembles, and in jazz, with a repertoire from early music played on historical instruments to world premieres.

The Cassatt String Quartet was founded in 1985. Originally the first participants in Juilliard's Young Artists Quartet Program, the Quartet has gone on to win many teaching fellowships and awards and has toured internationally. Named after impressionist painter Mary Cassatt, the quartet is based in New York City.

Cecil Aronowitz was a British viola player, a founding member of the Melos Ensemble, a leading chamber musician and an influential teacher at the Royal College of Music and the Royal Northern College of Music.

Terence Weil was a British cellist, principal cellist of the English Chamber Orchestra, a founding member of the Melos Ensemble, a leading chamber musician and an influential teacher at the Royal Northern College of Music.

Richard Fleischman American musician

Richard Fleischman is an American violist and viola d'amore player, conductor and pedagogue.

The Signum Quartet is a string quartet based in Cologne, Germany. Founded in 1994, it has been playing in the current formation since 2016.

Amihai Grosz is an Israeli violist. From 1995 to 2009, he was the violist with the Jerusalem Quartet. Since 2010, Grosz has been the Principal Violist of the Berlin Philharmonic.

Matthias Buchholz is a German violist and professor of viola in Cologne and Geneva.

Teng Li Chinese Canadian violist

Teng Li is a Chinese Canadian violist. She is currently the principal violist of the Los Angeles Philharmonic. Li was the principal violist of the Toronto Symphony Orchestra from 2004 to 2018. Along with her TSO solo appearances, Li has performed with the National Chamber Orchestra, the Santa Rosa Symphony, the Munich Chamber Orchestra, the Haddonfield Symphony, Shanghai Opera Orchestra, the Canadian Sinfonietta and Esprit Orchestra. Her performances have been broadcast on CBC Radio 2, National Public Radio, WQXR, WHYY (Pennsylvania), WFMT (Chicago), and Bavarian Radio (Munich). Ms. Li is also an active recitalist and chamber musician participating in the festivals of Marlboro, Santa Fe, Mostly Mozart, Music from Angel Fire, Rome, Moritzburg (Germany) and the Rising Stars Festival in Caramoor. She has performed with the Guarneri Quartet in New York, at Carnegie Hall and with the 92nd St. “Y” Chamber Music Society. Teng was also featured with the Guarneri Quartet in their last season (2009), and was also a member of the prestigious Lincoln Center Chamber Music Society Two Program.

Ulrich Koch was a German violist.

The Fauré Quartet is a German piano quartet, named after Gabriel Fauré. Founded in 1995, they have performed internationally and recorded, including works written for them by composers such as Volker David Kirchner and Toshio Hosokawa.

The Vogler Quartet is a German string quartet based in Berlin. It was founded in 1985 and has been playing together with an unchanged line-up since 1986.

Barbara Buntrock is a German violist and music educator.
