Hermann Voss (born 9 July 1934) [1] is a German violist, painter and puppet player. From 1975 to 2005 he taught viola and chamber music at the State University of Music and Performing Arts Stuttgart. Voss played the viola in the Melos Quartet for 40 years.
Voss was born in 1934 in Brünen on the Lower Rhine. He received his musical education at the Robert Schumann Hochschule at Düsseldorf and at the University of Music Freiburg with Sándor Végh and Ulrich Koch. After studying violin with Sándor Végh, he changed to viola under his new teacher Ulrich Koch. [2] Shortly thereafter, he was awarded in 1959 in Stuttgart on the viola with the 1st Prize of the German University Competition. In 1959 and 1960 Herrmann Voss attended the summer courses of the cellist Pablo Casals at Zermatt. In 1966 he again became a prizewinner of the ARD International Music Competition at Munich on the viola. From 1960 to 1967 Voss was principal violist of the Stuttgarter Kammerorchester.
In 1965 he was a founding member and until the dissolution in 2005 the only violist of the Melos Quartet.
From 1975, Voss was a lecturer in string quartet playing and from 1980 to 2005 professor of viola and chamber music at the State University of Music and Performing Arts Stuttgart. In addition, he regularly took on lectures at music festivals with masterclasses in Ratzeburg, Oberstdorf and at international masterclasses in London, Sydney and Tokyo as well as at the Academy for string quartet interpretation of the Fondation Hindemith at Blonay.
In addition to his work as a musician, Voss also devotes himself to a creative work by making drawings, etchings, watercolor and acrylic paintings. [3] With self-made puppet figures, masks and instruments, he regularly gives private and public performances in his own musical miniatures and pantomimes. The Melos Quartet was a much-recorded, Stuttgart-based string quartet active from 1965 until 2005, when its first violin died. It also went by the name Melos Quartett Stuttgart, partly to distinguish itself from the equally prominent chamber group the Melos Ensemble of London.

A founder member of the Huberman Quartet, with which he made his debut at Carnegie Hall, he has since appeared there with the Guarneri Quartet.

The Végh Quartet was a Hungarian string quartet founded in 1940 and led by its first violinist Sándor Végh for 40 years. The quartet was based in Budapest until it departed Hungary in 1946. It is particularly known for its recordings of the Beethoven and Bartók cycles. The quartet disbanded in 1980.

Teng Li is a Chinese Canadian violist. She is currently the principal violist of the Los Angeles Philharmonic. Li was the principal violist of the Toronto Symphony Orchestra from 2004 to 2018. Along with her TSO solo appearances, Li has performed with the National Chamber Orchestra, the Santa Rosa Symphony, the Munich Chamber Orchestra, the Haddonfield Symphony, Shanghai Opera Orchestra, the Canadian Sinfonietta and Esprit Orchestra. Her performances have been broadcast on CBC Radio 2, National Public Radio, WQXR, WHYY (Pennsylvania), WFMT (Chicago), and Bavarian Radio (Munich). Ms. Li is also an active recitalist and chamber musician participating in the festivals of Marlboro, Santa Fe, Mostly Mozart, Music from Angel Fire, Rome, Moritzburg (Germany) and the Rising Stars Festival in Caramoor. She has performed with the Guarneri Quartet in New York, at Carnegie Hall and with the 92nd St. “Y” Chamber Music Society. Teng was also featured with the Guarneri Quartet in their last season (2009), and was also a member of the prestigious Lincoln Center Chamber Music Society Two Program.
