Highworth Rural District was a rural district in the county of Wiltshire, England. It lay to the north and east of the town and municipal borough of Swindon.
Following the Local Government Act 1972, on 1 April 1974 the district was merged with the municipal borough of Swindon to form the Borough of Thamesdown. [1]
At the time of its dissolution it consisted of the following civil parishes to the north and east of Swindon. [1] [2]

Located north of the M4 motorway between junction 16 and Croft Road, Wichelstowe has three neighbourhoods: East, Middle and West Wichel. The development will comprise up to 4500 homes, employment space, public open space, shopping, community facilities for residents and various schools. In 2014 it was described as the country's largest housing project on public-owned land.
