Hiiraan Online (HOL) is one of the most popular websites dedicated to news and information about Somalia and the Horn of Africa. It was founded in 1999 to deliver news to the growing but underserved Somali diaspora. It has gained recognition for its impartiality and accurate news. History

Hiiraan Online was founded in Ottawa, Canada, on July 1, 1999. [1] Its founder, Ahmed Gure, a former airline Captain with Somali Airlines, [6] started the website to serve the growing Somali diaspora.[ citation needed ]

Content

The website publishes news articles, opinions, and political commentary [2] and remains one of the most critical [7] and reliable news websites in the Somali media landscape. [8] [9] Hiiraan Online is regularly cited frequently in academia, [2] [10] books [11] and international media. The website hosts external links to the popular daily radio services for BBC Somali and VOA Somali. The website also hosts job advertisements for international bodies, government agencies and NGOs. The Somali diaspora or Qurbajoogta refers to Somalis who were born in Greater Somalia and reside in areas of the world that they were not born in. The civil war in Somalia greatly increased the size of the Somali diaspora, as many Somalis moved from Greater Somalia primarily to Europe, North America, Southern Africa and Australia. There are also small Somali populations in other pockets of Europe and Asia. The UN estimates that in 2015, approximately 2 million people from Somalia were living outside of the country's borders.

The federal government operates two official radio and TV networks, which exist alongside a number of private and foreign stations. In February 2013, the Ministry of Information, Posts and Telecommunication also launched a broad-based consultative process for the reformation of media legislation.

The BBC Somali Service is a BBC World Service radio station transmitted in the Somali language and based in Broadcasting House in West London and in Nairobi, where most of the radio and digital operations are based. Ahmed Abdisalam Adan, also known as Ahmed Mohamed Aden, is a Somali radio journalist, media founder and politician. He is a co-founder of HornAfrik Media Inc based in Mogadishu. In the 2000s, he also served as a Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Public Security in the former Transitional Federal Government.

Hassan Ali Khaire, popularly known as Hassan Khaire, is a senior politician and is the former Prime Minister of Somalia. He was appointed on 23 February 2017 by Somalia President Mohamed Abdullahi Mohamed "Farmaajo" and resigned on Saturday July 25, 2020 after MPs passed a disputed vote of no confidence.

Almaas Elman was a Somali-Canadian humanitarian aid worker, the eldest daughter of a prominent family of humanitarian aid-workers. Her parents were Elman Ali Ahmed and Fartuun Adan. She, her mother and her sisters emigrated to Canada in the early 1990s. Her father was gunned down in 1996. Her mother helped found the Elman Peace Center. One of her sisters Ilwad Elman was a short-listed candidate for the 2019 Nobel Peace Prize. Her husband, a Somali-Swedish tech entrepreneur, was Zakaria Hersi. They married in 2017.

Yasin Haji Mohamoud Hiir also known as Faratoon (Faraton) is a Somaliland politician, who is currently the speaker of Somaliland's Lower House of Parliament.

Iman Elman is a Somali-Canadian military officer. When she was a child, Elman's parents were peace advocates in wartorn Somalia. When the dangers of working in Somalia increased her parents agreed that her father, Elman Ali Ahmed would stay in Somalia, and continue to work for Peace, while her mother, Fartuun Adan would raise their daughters in Canada. When her daughters reached adult-hood Fartuun returned to Somalia, to renew her work for Peace. Iman's elder sisters, Almaas Elman and Ilwad Elman, also returned to Somalia, followed by Iman herself.
