Hilda M. Hankerson (born July 2, 1956) is an American high school girls basketball coach. She is the head coach for the Westlake High School (Georgia) [1] Lions girls basketball team where she won one National Championship and four Georgia State High School girls basketball Championships. She played for the Mercer Bears women's basketball team alongside of Hall of Famers Cindy Brogdon and Sybil Blalock from 1974 to 1978. Hankerson was also an assistant coach for the Mississippi State Bulldogs women's basketball team. [2] In 2020, she won the USA Today 2020 Girls High School Basketball Coach of the Year. [3]

Basketball career

Hilda "Heard" Hankerson is a graduate of Mercer University. [4] She played point guard for the Mercer Bears women's basketball [5] team from 1974 to 1978. She was a four-year starter and played an integral role in Mercer University women winning 2 State Championships and 2 championship runners-up. The Bears were Southern Women's Athletic Conference regular season and tournament champions and AIAW regional champs during her playing tenure. Additionally, Mercer won the Georgia AIAW Tournament and advanced to the championship game of the AIAW regional tournament. During her career, Mercer advanced to the Women's National Invitational Tournament making it to the round of 16.

Coaching career

Hankerson's coaching career began in 1978. She served at Mississippi State University Bulldog women's basketball team as an Assistant Basketball Coach, Recruiting Coordinator and Guards Coach, from 1978 to 1982 in the Southeastern Conference. [6]

Westlake High School

Hankerson joined the Westlake Lady lions in 1997. [7] [8] During her time with Westlake she has led the team to five final fours, five elite eights, four sweet 16s, eight state playoffs and nine regional championships. [9] She achieved her 600th win during the 2018–2019 season, finishing the year with a 30–0 record. [10] [11] In 2019 Hankerson guided the team to their third consecutive Class 7A state title, following a 72–53 win over Collins Hill. [12] The team won the title for the fourth time in 2020. [13]

She also served as Athletic Director for Westlake from 2001 to 2011. During her tenure as both Athletic Director and Head Coach her teams averaged 20 plus wins each season since 1995 and over 50 girls basketball student athletes have received college scholarships from schools including the University of Georgia, Clemson University, Mercer University, Georgia Southern University, Troy State University, the University Southern Mississippi, Xavier University, College of Charleston, University of Alabama Birmingham, University of Tampa, and Jackson State University. Her 2020–21 team won the Geico High School Girls Basketball National Championship carried on ESPN2 3 April 2021 in Ft Myers, FL giving the State of Georgia its first ever girls high school basketball national championship. [14] As Athletic Director, her program produced notables athletes to include former WNBA player Anriel Howard aka Lash Legend with the WWE and Cam Newton 2010 Heisman Trophy Winner and 2011 NFL No. 1 Draft Pick. She coached and personally mentored high school and collegiate standout NCAA National Champion guard Raven Johnson. [15]

USA Basketball

Hankerson's first USA Basketball assignment was as a court coach for the 2019 USA Basketball Women's U16 National Teams trials. [9] In an interview following the assignment, she shared that the position was the "most memorable highlight of my career." [16]

Personal life

Hilda is the daughter of the late Air Force Technical Sergeant Nathan Heard, Jr. and surviving Mother Mrs Mary Heard of whom she attributes her inspiration and success to date. [17] She is married to Theophilus Hankerson and has three sons, David C. Morris, Jarel R. Morris, Donovan D. Hankerson and one granddaughter, Kenylee Morris. Her siblings Brenda Heard Dent and Margaret Heard Cooper also played basketball. Brenda played with Hilda at Mercer University and Margaret in High School. Her brother in law, retired Air Force Colonel Willie Cooper, II [18] played for the Mercer University men's basketball team and currently serves as the Westlake High School girls basketball team chaplain.

Tara Ann VanDerveer is a retired American basketball coach who was the head women's basketball coach at Stanford University from 1985 until her retirement in 2024. Designated the Setsuko Ishiyama Director of Women's Basketball, VanDerveer led the Stanford Cardinal to three NCAA Women's Division I Basketball Championships: in 1990, 1992 and 2021. She stepped away from the Stanford program for a year to serve as the U.S. national team head coach at the 1996 Olympic Games. VanDerveer is the 1990 Naismith National Coach of the Year and a ten-time Pac-12 Coach of the Year. She is also one of only nine NCAA Women's Basketball coaches to win over 900 games, and one of ten NCAA Division I coaches – women's or men's – to win 1,000 games. VanDerveer was inducted into the Women's Basketball Hall of Fame in 2002. On December 15, 2020, she passed Pat Summitt for most wins in women's college basketball history. In April 2018, she was inducted into the Texas Sports Hall of Fame.

Cathy Rush is a former basketball coach at Immaculata from 1972 to 1977. She led Immaculata to three consecutive AIAW national titles from 1972–1974. She led the Mighty Macs to six consecutive final four appearances in her six seasons with the school, attaining a 149–15 record. Rush was inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame on April 7, 2008. She had also been inducted to the Women's Basketball Hall of Fame in 2000 and the Philadelphia Sports Hall of Fame in 2005.

Betty Faith Jaynes was an American basketball coach. She played basketball in high school in Georgia, and coached basketball at James Madison University. She was the first executive director of the Women's Basketball Coaches Association and is inducted into several sports halls of fame. Jaynes was inducted into the Women's Basketball Hall of Fame in 2000.

Fran Garmon is an American basketball coach. Her collegiate heading coaching career included position at Temple Junior College, Delta State, and Texas Christian University. She was active in the USA Basketball, serving as head coach of the gold medal winning World University Games team in 1979 and the Pan American Games team in 1983. She also held leadership positions with the US national team. Garmon was inducted into the Women's Basketball Hall of Fame in 2000.


Lataunya Pollard Romanazzi is a former college basketball player who played for Long Beach State from 1979 to 1983. With Long Beach, Pollard scored 3,001 points and was the 1983 recipient of the Wade Trophy. During this time period, Pollard played for the American team that qualified for the 1980 Summer Olympics before the United States withdrew from the event. While on the American team, Pollard won silver at the 1981 World University Games and 1983 FIBA World Championship for Women. Outside of America, Pollard played basketball in Europe from 1983 to the early 1990s. Pollard was inducted into the Women's Basketball Hall of Fame in 2001 and Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame in 2005.

Carol Callan is an American basketball executive. She is the first female President of the International Basketball Federation (FIBA) Americas and director of the United States women's national basketball team. Under her guidance, she has helped lead the United States to six consecutive Olympic gold medals from 1996 until 2012 and four World Championships. In 2020, Callan was inducted into the Women's Basketball Hall of Fame as a contributor. Callan is a current member of the FIBA Central Board, FIBA's highest executive body.

Tracy Claxton is a former basketball player who amassed 2,420 career points in 1980 while at Wilbur Cross High School in New Haven, Connecticut. She continued to hold the girls basketball record for Connecticut until 1987. At university, Claxton held the 1981 rebound season record with the Kansas Jayhawks women's basketball team and was with Kansas when they finished third at the 1981 AIAW National Division I Basketball Championship. The following year, Claxton held the rebound season record again while also holding the points season record for 1982. After leaving Kansas to join the Old Dominion Lady Monarchs in 1983, Claxton was named the most outstanding player in the 1985 NCAA Division I championship where the 1984–85 team defeated Georgia 70–65.

Annette Smith-Knight has worked in the community services department for the University of Texas at Austin since the mid-2000s. Smith began her time with Texas when she played for the Texas Longhorns women's basketball team during the 1980s. While with Texas, Smith appeared at the final of the 1982 AIAW National Division I Basketball Championship and won gold at the 1983 World University Games with the American basketball team. After not playing for over a year due to injury, Smith resumed playing in 1985 and won the 1986 NCAA Division I women's basketball tournament with the Longhorns. Following her 131 career games, Smith's school career records of 1052 field goals and 2523 points with Texas have remained the highest for over 30 years.

Diana Kay James is a color analyst for Southern Miss Lady Eagles basketball games since 2005. Before starting her radio career, James was a high school gym teacher in Ocilla, Georgia during the early 1970s. As a basketball coach for Berry College from 1972 to 1977, her women's team won the 1976 AIAW National Small College Basketball Championship. After her team were consolation game champions at the 1977 AIAW National Small College Basketball Championship, James left Berry that year with 85 wins and 20 losses.

Lucille Kyvallos is a former women's collegiate basketball coach. Kyvallos coached the Queens College women's basketball team from 1968 through 1981. She is a member of the New York City Basketball Hall of Fame. She served as chair for the Association for Intercollegiate Athletics for Women (AIAW)'s basketball committee and tournament director for the AIAW national championship in 1973. She coached the first women's college basketball game to be played at Madison Square Garden on February 22, 1975. Kyvallos, an advocate for women's sports, wrote: "Women who achieve in sport add a new dimension to the role of women in American society."
