Historisch Centrum Leeuwarden (Historical Center Leeuwarden), located in Leeuwarden, Netherlands, preserves documents pertaining to the history of Leeuwarden.

History

Leeuwarden was the first Dutch city to get an official city archive in 1838. Wopke Eekhoff was the first archivist. Historisch Centrum Leeuwarden (HCL) was established in 2001. Since 2007 it is located in a new building in the city-centre.

Preservation

The main focus of Historisch Centrum Leeuwarden is preserving the municipal archives of Leeuwarden. The archives consists of hundreds of archives from the municipal government, companies, private people, families and various organisations. It also houses the largest image collection of the northern Netherlands, an extensive library with books and multimedia and a municipal art collection. The exhibition The story of Leeuwarden tells the history of the Frisian capital. [1]

It is also custodian of Archaeological Centre Leeuwarden, the leaning tower of Oldehove [2] and the nearby Pier Pander Museum with Temple. [3]

Achmeatoren is a skyscraper in Leeuwarden, Friesland, the Netherlands. The Achmeatoren is 114.6 meters (376 ft) high and has 26 floors, it was opened in 2002. The building was commissioned by Achmea and designed by the architects Abe Bonnema and Jan van der Leij from Bonnema Architects in Hardegarijp. Since its completion the building has lost its granite plates three times but fortunately no one has ever been injured.

The Network of War Collections is a partnership of over 250 archival institutions, museums, remembrance centers and libraries in the Kingdom of the Netherlands, the former Dutch colonial empire, and internationally to bring together scattered collections of resources pertaining to World War II. The network is financed by the Ministry of Health, Welfare and Sport and receives a contribution from the National Fund for Peace, Freedom and Veteran Care.
