Ireland and Georgia first played each other at rugby union in 1998 when Ireland won 70-0 in Lansdowne Road as part of 1999 Rugby World Cup qualifying. They have played each other on four occasions, three times in Ireland, with the other match in the neutral venue of Bordeaux as part of the 2007 Rugby World Cup. The Pacific Nations Cup is an international rugby union competition held between three Pacific nations: Fiji, Samoa and Tonga. The 2019 edition of the tournament will also include the national teams of Canada, Japan and United States. First held in 2006, the tournament is intended to strengthen the Tier 2 rugby nations by providing competitive test matches in a tournament format.

The Nations Cup is a rugby union competition that was first held in 2006 at Estádio Universitário in Lisbon with Argentina A, Italy A, Portugal and Russia taking part. The teams of World Rugby's member nations are ranked based on their game results, with the most successful teams being ranked highest. A point system is used, with points being awarded on the basis of the results of World Rugby-recognized international matches. Rankings are based on the team's performance, with more recent results and more significant matches being more heavily weighted to help reflect the current competitive state of a team. The ranking system was introduced the month before the 2003 Rugby World Cup, with the first new rankings issued on 8 September 2003. World Rugby now also publishes rankings for women's teams.

Rugby union is a moderately popular team sport played in Romania with a tradition of more than 100 years. The Romanian men's national team are currently 19th in the World Rugby Rankings as of 31 October 2020.

The Wales women's national rugby union team first played in 1987. Wales plays in the Women's Rugby World Cup and the Women's Six Nations Championship.

The 2015 World Rugby Tbilisi Cup was the third edition of this international rugby union tournament, created by World Rugby. It was played from 13 to 21 June 2015 at the Avchala Stadium in Tbilisi, running alongside the 2015 World Rugby Nations Cup in Romania. The hosts Georgia were joined by 2015 Rugby World Cup counterparts Uruguay, and development sides Emerging Ireland and Emerging Italy.

Ireland and Canada first played each other at rugby union in 1987 when Ireland won 33-11 in Dunedin in the group stage of the inaugural rugby world cup. They have played each other eight times, three times in Canada and three times in Ireland, with the other two matches in neutral venues as part of the 1987 and 2015 rugby world cups. Ireland have won seven of the eight matches played between the teams, with one draw.
