Hobe Fort or Huwei Fort is a historical fort located near Fort Santo Domingo,in Tamsui District,New Taipei,Taiwan,Republic of China.
In the 1880s Imperial China (Qing dynasty) and France fought a war over an area that is today Vietnam. In October 1884 as part of the Keelung Campaign, the French fleet sailed to northern Taiwan where it blockaded the ports of Keelung and Tamsui, and then landed troops at both places. The Chinese managed to turn back the assault at Tamsui, though Keelung fell to the French.
The Sino-French War (1884–1885) at Tamsui proved to the Qing government that their coastline defense wasn't as secure as it needed to be. [1] Following the war,the Chinese government decided to strengthen Taiwan's coastal defenses with forts at Keelung,Tainan –Fort Zeelandia –and Tamsui. Governor of Taiwan Liu Mingchuan was ordered to strengthen the defenses on the Taiwan Strait. Governor Liu planned to build forts at every major estuary in order to facilitate defense. He adopted the military strategy of "Learn from foreigners to defeat foreigners". In particular,he employed a German expert Lieut Max E. Hecht to help set up ten new forts at the estuaries of Penghu,Keelung,Hobe (Tamsui),Anping and Cihou (Cijin). There were two forts in Hobe, the "Key to the North Gate" which was Hobe Fort and the "Defense of the East". However, the latter no longer exists.
Hobe Fort was finished in 1888 (the Guang-Xu 12th year of the Qing dynasty),taking western forts as a reference to design blueprint. So far it is the best preserved fort built by Liu Mingchuan in Taiwan.
At that time Governor Liu purchased 31 "Armstrong" cannons and German "Krupp" cannons from the British through the Jardine Matheson Holdings Limited and set up these cannons at ten new forts in Taiwan. The installation of these cannons was completed in 1889 (the Guang-Xu 15th year of the Qing dynasty). However Hobe Fort never saw action during wartime, hence its fairly good shape.
During the Japanese colonial period, the Imperial Japanese Army (IJA) withdrew four cannons from Hobe Fort and turned the place into an exercise field for artillery practice. After Taiwan came under Chinese Nationalist (KMT) administration,Nationalist troops were stationed in Hobe Fort. It was not until 1985 that Hobe Fort was designated by the Ministry of the Interior,Executive Yuan,as a National Level 2 Ancient Monument. After downsizing of Taiwan's Provincial Government,Hobe Fort came to be managed by the Taipei County Government and reopened to the public after restoration. Currently it is classified as a National Monument.
Because the fort never saw combat it remains almost entirely intact. The barracks that once stood in the Central Square during the Qing dynasty are gone,as are the guns, but the outer walls, vaults and gate are close to their original conditions. The vaults inside the fort now contain a museum about the French landing in Tamsui.
The outmost periphery of the Fort is piled up with soil. The earthen wall is 6.5 meters in height, about the same height as the Fort, with shelter and defense capabilities. The trench surrounding the Fort separates the sub-wall from the earthen wall, similar to the role of the moat. The only exit and entrance is the barrack gate in the southeastern side of the Fort. The gate still bears the four original Chinese words 北門鎖鑰(Běimén Suǒyuè),meaning "The Key to the North Gate",in regular script on the lintel over the door inscribed by Liu Mingchuan, who was governor at the time of the fort's construction. The main wall of the Fort was built using iron cement materials. The maximum thickness of the sub-wall is 4.2 meters and the maximum height is up to 7 meters. The sub-wall has several holes which were used for shell stockpiles during the war.
The barbettes are gathered up on both sides facing the sea. The biggest cannon is installed in the north-west. The barbette has a circular cannon shot rack with full 360-degree rotation. The firing angle covers the entire Tamsui River estuary. The sub-wall near the muzzle is in concave arc shape in response to trajectory clearance. There are four modern breechloaders mounted on the barbette. The main barbette is set up with one 12-inch Armstrong breechloader and one 8-inch Krupp breechloader. The secondary barbette is set up with one 10-inch Armstrong breechloader and one 8-inch Krupp breechloader. The sub-wall next to the barbette has a row of shell-shaped fillisters used for shell stockpiles.
The top of the barracks is covered with a layer of soil. The soil coating is soft in texture with the effects of attracting shells (containing the impact of shells). There are also ventilation holes in the soil coating.
The sub-wall has a corridor used as space for ammunition depot and barracks. The corridors are connected with each other, providing soldiers with mobility of combat dispatch.
The Central Square once had barracks in the Qing dynasty, and is speculated to have been used as a commanding office by high-level officers. After it collapsed during the Japanese colonial period, this open space was converted to a field of military training.
Keelung,Chilung or Jilong, officially known as Keelung City,is a major port city situated in the northeastern part of Taiwan. The city is part of the Taipei–Keelung metropolitan area with neighboring New Taipei City and Taipei. Nicknamed the Rainy Port for its frequent rain and maritime role, the city is Taiwan's second largest seaport, and was the world's 7th largest port in 1984.
Tang Jingsong was a Chinese general and statesman. He commanded the Yunnan Army in the Sino-French War,and made an important contribution to Qing dynasty China's military effort in Tonkin by persuading the Black Flag leader Liu Yongfu to serve under Chinese command. His intelligent, though ultimately unsuccessful, direction of the Siege of Tuyên Quang was widely praised. He later became governor of the Chinese province of Taiwan. Following China's cession of Taiwan to Japan at the end of the First Sino-Japanese War (1894–1895) he became president of the short-lived Republic of Formosa.
Fort Santo Domingo is a historical fortress in Tamsui District,New Taipei City,Taiwan. It was originally a wooden fort built in 1628 by the Manila-based Spanish East Indies of the Spanish Empire, who named it in Spanish:el Fuerte de Santo Domingo, lit. 'the Fort of Saint Dominic'. However, after refurbishing it in stone, the initial fort was repeatedly ordered to be dismantled and withdrawn from around 1637 by Spanish Governor-General Sebastián Hurtado de Corcuera for economic downsizing and retrenchment, which their rival Dutch East India Company (VOC) of the Dutch Empire soon found out and later invaded in 1641 and won by the Second Battle of San Salvador in 1642. After the battle, the Dutch rebuilt a fort in the original site in 1644 and renamed it in Dutch:Fort Antonio, after Antonio van Diemen, the then Governor-General of the Dutch East India Company (VOC). Since the Dutch were called in Taiwanese Hokkien Chinese:紅毛;Pe̍h-ōe-jī:Âng-mn̂g;lit. 'Red-haired (people)') by the Han Chinese immigrants during the time, the fort was then nicknamed in Taiwanese Hokkien Chinese:紅毛城;Pe̍h-ōe-jī:Âng-mn̂g-siâⁿ;lit. 'Red-hair fort'.
Liu Mingchuan (1836–1896),courtesy name Xingsan, was a Chinese military general and politician during the late Qing dynasty. He was born in Hefei,Anhui. Liu became involved in the suppression of the Taiping Rebellion at an early age,and worked closely with Zeng Guofan and Li Hongzhang as he emerged as an important Huai Army officer. In the aftermath of the Sino-French War,succeeding Ding Richang he was appointed the first governor of the newly established Taiwan Province. Today he is remembered for his efforts in modernizing Taiwan during his tenure as governor, and several institutions have been given his name, including Ming Chuan University in Taipei.
The Japanese invasion of Taiwan, also known as Yiwei War in Chinese, was a conflict between the Empire of Japan and the armed forces of the short-lived Republic of Formosa following the Qing dynasty's cession of Taiwan to Japan in April 1895 at the end of the First Sino-Japanese War. The Japanese sought to take control of their new possession, while the Republican forces fought to resist Japanese occupation. The Japanese landed near Keelung on the northern coast of Taiwan on 29 May 1895,and in a five-month campaign swept southwards to Tainan. Although their advance was slowed by guerrilla activity, the Japanese defeated the Formosan forces whenever they attempted to make a stand. The Japanese victory at Baguashan on 27 August, the largest battle ever fought on Taiwanese soil, doomed the Formosan resistance to an early defeat. The fall of Tainan on 21 October ended organised resistance to Japanese occupation, and inaugurated five decades of Japanese rule in Taiwan.
The Qing dynasty ruled over the island of Taiwan from 1683 to 1895. The Qing dynasty sent an army led by general Shi Lang and defeated the Ming loyalist Kingdom of Tungning in 1683. Taiwan was then formally annexed in April 1684.
Ershawan Battery,or better known as Tenable Gate of the Sea is a battery emplacements camp in Zhongzheng District,Keelung,Taiwan. It was built during Taiwan's Qing era and was the site of combat between the French and Chinese forces during the Sino-French War. It was the command post of Liu Ming-chuan,who was later appointed by Qing court as the first governor of Taiwan, when he was charged with the defense of Keelung during the war. It lost its military value under Japanese rule and is currently listed as a class one national historical monument.
The Keelung campaign was a controversial military campaign undertaken by French forces in northern Formosa (Taiwan) during the Sino-French War. After making a botched attack on Keelung in August 1884,the French landed an expeditionary corps of 2,000 men and captured the port in October 1884. Unable to advance beyond their bridgehead, they were invested inside Keelung by superior Chinese forces under the command of the imperial commissioner Liu Mingchuan. In November and December 1884 cholera and typhoid drained the strength of the French expeditionary corps, while reinforcements for the Chinese army flowed into Formosa via the Pescadores Islands, raising its strength to 35,000 men by the end of the war. Reinforced in January 1885 to a strength of 4,500 men,the French won two impressive tactical victories against the besieging Chinese in late January and early March 1885,but were not strong enough to exploit these victories. The Keelung campaign ended in April 1885 in a strategic and tactical stalemate. The campaign was criticised at the time by Admiral Amédée Courbet, the commander of the French Far East Squadron,as strategically irrelevant and a wasteful diversion of the French navy.
The Huai Army, named for the Huai River, was a military force allied with the Qing dynasty raised to contain the Taiping Rebellion in 1862. It was also called the Anhui Army because it was based in Anhui province. It helped to restore the stability of the Qing dynasty. Unlike the traditional Green Standard Army or Eight Banners forces of the Qing, the Huai Army was largely a militia army, based on personal rather than institutional loyalties. It was armed with a mixture of traditional and modern weapons. Li Hongzhang,a commander in the Xiang Army, created the Huai Army in October 1861. It succeeded Zeng Guofan’s Xiang Army. The Huai Army itself was succeeded by the New Army and the Beiyang Army, which were created in the late 19th century.
The Battle of Tamsui,Danshui,or Hobe was a significant French defeat by the Qing dynasty at Tamsui on Taiwan during the Keelung Campaign of the Sino-French War.
The Battle of Keelung was the first significant engagement of the Japanese invasion of Taiwan (1895) on 2–3 June 1895 when the short-lived Republic of Formosa sought to repel the Japanese military forces sent there to occupy the ceded territories,by China's Qing dynasty,of the Taiwan and the Pescadores Islands to Japan under the April 1895 Treaty of Shimonoseki. The treaty was the result of China's defeat in the First Sino-Japanese War.

Cihou Fort or Cihou Battery is a historic fort in Cijin District,Kaohsiung,Taiwan, formerly guarding the northern entrance to Kaohsiung Harbor.
The Nan'ao General Headquarters (南澳总兵府) is located in Nan'ao County,Shantou,Guangdong province,China. It served as a military center for coastal defense of Guangdong,Fujian province, and Taiwan. The Headquarters is now used as a museum of coast defense.
The Xiyu Western Fort or Xiyu Western Battery is a former fort and battery in Wai'an Village,Xiyu Township,Penghu,Taiwan.
The architecture of Taiwan can be traced back to stilt housing of the aborigines in prehistoric times;to the building of fortresses and churches in the north and south used to colonize and convert the inhabitants during the Dutch and Spanish period;the Tungning period when Taiwan was a base of anti-Qing sentiment and Minnan-style architecture was introduced;in Qing dynasty period,a mix of Chinese and Western architecture appeared and artillery battery flourished during Qing's Self-Strengthening Movement;During the Japanese rule of Taiwan, the Minnan,Japanese and Western culture were main influencers in architectural designs and saw the introduction and use of reinforced concrete. Due to excessive Westernization as a colony, after the retrocession of Taiwan to the Republic of China in 1945 from Japan at the end of World War II,Chinese classical style became popular and entered into international mainstream as a postmodern design style. Today,Taiwanese architecture has undergone much diversification, every style of architecture can be seen.
Zhang Gaoyuan was a general of the Huai Army during the late Qing dynasty.
The military history of Taiwan spans at least 400 years and is the history of battles and armed actions that took place in Taiwan and its surrounding islands. The island was the base of Chinese pirates who came into conflict with the Ming dynasty during the 16th century. From 1624 to 1662,Taiwan was the base of Dutch and Spanish colonies. The era of European colonization ended when a Ming general named Koxinga retreated to Taiwan as a result of the Ming-Qing War and ousted the Dutch in 1661. The Dutch held out in northern Taiwan until 1668 when they left due to indigenous resistance. Koxinga's dynasty ruled southwestern Taiwan as the Kingdom of Tungning and attacked the Qing dynasty during the Revolt of the Three Feudatories (1673–1681).
