The Hong Kong Lacrosse Association is the governing body of lacrosse in Hong Kong. Founded in 1993, HKLA is a member Of World Lacrosse, [1] Asia Pacific Lacrosse Union (APLU), [2] as well as Sports Federation & Olympic Committee Hong Kong, China (SF&OC). [3]
The representative teams organized by the association regularly participates in international and regional tournaments, both in Field lacrosse and Box Lacrosse.
World Lacrosse Championship : The Hong Kong Men's Representative Team (HKMRT) has participated in the world ranking tournament since 2002, The WC is a once every 4 years event organized by FIL. The Men's Representative Team participated in the 2018 FIL World Lacrosse Championship at Israel in July 2018 and finished with 27th place out of 46 teams.
Women's Lacrosse World Cup : The Hong Kong Women's Representative Team (HKWRT) first participated in the world ranking tournament since 2013, The WC is a once every 4 years event organized by FIL. The Hong Kong Women's representative team is officially ranked 18th in the world.
The Asia Pacific Lacrosse Championship (ASPAC): The only Asia bi-annual ranking tournament organized by APLU. Only National teams are invited and Hong Kong first participated in 2005.Currently, The Men and Women's Rep teams are at 4th place out of 8 & 6 teams respectively.
U19 Championship: A once every four years’ event. Hong Kong participated in the U19 Championship for the first time in 2016 for boys and finished 11th out of 14 teams.
Greater China Cup (GCC) started in 2016 in order to promote Lacrosse among Hong Kong, Taiwan and midland China. Hence; the name Greater China Cup. The location of the tournament rotates among the three .
Leagues:
HKLA runs five annual Men's and Women's league divided into different level from amateur to elite. League season starts on late Sept./early Oct every year and runs til early May. Presently, there are 6 men's club team and 3 women's club team competing for club trophy. 4 elite men team will battle for the premier league title. 2 men's team completing for the box lacrosse league title. 4 men's and 2 women's teams battling for the 7's league title. Starting 2017, HKLA is organizing a mixed league which is more of a social game rather than competitive as the objective is to build a Lacrosse community.
Hong Kong Lacrosse Open
HKLA organize the Asia's most popular annual tournament for clubs and national teams in Asia since 2002. It attracts the most competitive teams in the region to fly to Hong Kong to participate. Hong Kong Lacrosse Open 2018 was held at Stanley Ho Sports Centre, University of Hong Kong and King's Park Sports Ground from 28 April to 1 May 2018. The tournament is the biggest lacrosse competition happened in Asia region. With 18 teams participating in both Men's and Women's Division, and the firstly held Youth's Lacrosse Festival in Hong Kong attracting 12 teams including 6 local schools and 6 inviting teams within Asian region dividing into U10 and U13 division.
High Performance Program (HPP) is an elite program for HKLA development. Members participation is by invitation only and would have to go through series of tryouts. It is a 2 years’ program and members are expected to committed to intensive training programs and this is the major source of selection of the Hong Kong Representative team.
Development Academy: The program is designed to attract young players to engage in the sport and provide adequate activities to retain potential players. HKLA will provides regular training and coaching. This programme will serve as talent identification for the Hong Kong Lacrosse Under 19 Representative Team and the High Performance Programme (HPP).
Lacrosse is a team sport played with a lacrosse stick and a lacrosse ball. It is the oldest organized sport in North America, with its origins in a tribal game played by the indigenous peoples of the Eastern Woodlands and by various other indigenous peoples of North America. The game was extensively modified reducing the violence by European colonizers to create its current collegiate and professional form.
The Hong Kong Sevens is considered the premier tournament on the World Rugby Sevens Series competition. The Hong Kong Sevens is currently the seventh tournament on the World Series calendar, and is held annually in Hong Kong on a weekend in late March or early April. The tournament spans three days, beginning on a Friday and concluding on Sunday. The tournament is organised each year by the Hong Kong Rugby Union (HKRU). This year's Hong Kong Rugby Sevens was originally due to be held on Friday 3, Saturday 4, Sunday 5 April 2020, but was postponed, and then later cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The World Lacrosse Championship (WLC) is the international men's field lacrosse championship organized by World Lacrosse that occurs every four years.
Sports in Hong Kong are a significant part of its culture. Due to British influence going as far back as the late 19th century, Hong Kong had an earlier introduction to Western athletics compared to other Asia regions. Horse racing has most spectators, while football, basketball, swimming, badminton, table tennis, cycling and running have the most participants. Golf is an increasingly popular sport, despite the relatively few number of courses in the city. In 2009, Hong Kong successfully organised the V East Asian Games and it was the biggest sporting event ever held in the territory. Other major international sporting events including the Equestrian at the 2008 Summer Olympics, the Hong Kong Open Golf Championship, the Hong Kong Sevens, Hong Kong Marathon, AFC Asian Cup, EAFF East Asian Cup, Hong Kong Badminton Open, Hong Kong Tennis Classic, Premier League Asia Trophy, and Lunar New Year Cup. Hong Kong athletes have improved in worldwide rankings. As of 2010, there are 32 Hong Kong athletes from seven sports ranking in world's Top 20, 29 athletes in six sports in Asia top 10 ranking. Moreover, Hong Kong is equally impressive performance of athletes with disabilities in 2009, having won four world championships and two Asian Champions.
The Hong Kong national rugby union team, nicknamed the Dragons, is one of the better rugby sides in Asia outside Japan, and has consistently made the repechages of the Rugby World Cup qualifying. Rugby union in Hong Kong is administered by the Hong Kong Rugby Union since 1952, and competes annually in the Asia Rugby Championship.
Canada won its second gold medal at the 2006 World Lacrosse Championship, held in London, Ontario from 14 to 22 July. The Canadians defeated the United States in the final 15–10 in front of 7,735 fans. It marked only the second loss by the Americans since the championship was founded in 1967. The first was Canada's historic 17–16 overtime win in the 1978 final. Canadian Geoff Snider was the tournament MVP for his outstanding face-off performance, winning 19 of 28 draws in the final.
College lacrosse is played by student-athletes at colleges and universities in the United States and Canada. In both countries, men's field lacrosse and women's lacrosse are played at both the varsity and club levels. College lacrosse in Canada is sponsored by the Canadian University Field Lacrosse Association (CUFLA) and Maritime University Field Lacrosse League (MUFLL), while in the United States, varsity men's and women's lacrosse is governed by the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) and National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA). There are also university lacrosse programs in the United Kingdom sponsored by British Universities and Colleges Sport (BUCS) and programs in Japan.
Rugby union in China is a growing sport; however, it is still not overly popular. China became affiliated to the International Rugby Board in 1997 and as of 1 July 2019, its women's XV side was ranked 24th and its men's XV side 80th in the world. Neither the women's team nor the men's team has yet qualified for a Women's Rugby World Cup or a men's Rugby World Cup. However, China has hopes of one day hosting the men's event, and World Rugby has indicated it supports taking the event there.
The India women's national football team is controlled by the All India Football Federation and represents India in women's international football competitions. The women's team resumed playing on 7 September 2012 after nearly a year-long hiatus. Under the global jurisdiction of FIFA and governed in Asia by the AFC, the team is also part of the South Asian Football Federation. The team was one of the best teams in Asia in the mid 70s to early 80s, when they became runners-up at 1979 and 1983 AFC Women's Asian Cup. Presently, the Indian team has won all the SAFF Women's Championship that they have participated in since 2010.
Rugby union in Hong Kong is long established, partly as a result of its being a British colony. In contrast to the People's Republic of China, it has had a continuous existence dating back over a hundred years, and is most notable for the Hong Kong Sevens tournament, the most well known of the rugby sevens tournaments. The top domestic club competition is the HKRFU Premiership.
The Scotland national men's lacrosse team is governed by Lacrosse Scotland and is coached by Matt Bagley.
England Lacrosse is the national governing body for lacrosse in England. The sport is managed through the Men's and Women's Playing Committees and the leagues administered by region: the South of England Men's Lacrosse Association (SEMLA), North of England Men's Lacrosse Association (NEMLA), South East Women's Lacrosse Association (SEWLA), South West Women's Lacrosse Association (SWWLA), and North Women's Lacrosse Association (NWLA). The England Lacrosse CEO is Mark Coups.
Thailand Lacrosse Association is the sanctioned governing body of men's and women's lacrosse in Thailand, based out of Bangkok, Thailand. The official representative of Thailand to the Federation of International Lacrosse, currently an Associate Member to FIL. Originally started by several Thais who attended school in America, and played the sport. Thailand Lacrosse quickly gained many members who never play the sport before. TLA focus on introducing and developing the game of lacrosse in Thailand, pursuing the growth in all level of the game. While the Men's National team target to be one of the most competitive team in Asia, and help marketing, and spreading the word of lacrosse in Asia to the rest of the world.
The 2017 FIL Women's Lacrosse World Cup, the tenth World Cup, is the preeminent international women's lacrosse tournament. The tournament is being held at the Surrey Sports Park in Guildford, Surrey, in the South East of England, with 25 nations competing. Rathbones Investment Management plc committed as the title sponsor for the event in 2014.
The 2018 World Lacrosse Championship was the 13th edition of the international men’s field lacrosse tournament for national teams organized by the Federation of International Lacrosse (FIL). As many as 50 countries were expected to compete in the tournament; with the official total coming in at 46, which made the 2018 WLC the largest of all-time. The games were held in Netanya, Israel on 12–21 July 2018. The United States won the tournament, its 10th championship in the history of the event.
The Hong Kong Golf Association (HKGA) is Hong Kong's national golf association. The HKGA is primarily concerned with managing and overseeing the development of the sport of golf in Hong Kong. The HKGA provides guidance on the running of national championships, supports in the training of players, and also helps to finance a national team that represents Hong Kong in international competitions. The HKGA currently oversees 40 amateur tournaments annually, and is involved in the running of The Hong Kong Open.
The Philippine national ice hockey team is the national men's ice hockey team of the Philippines. The team is controlled by the Federation of Ice Hockey League (FIHL) and has been associate member of the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF). The Philippines is currently not ranked in the IIHF World Ranking and have never entered in any World Championship tournaments or at any Olympic Games, but have played in the Challenge Cup of Asia, a regional tournament for lower-tier hockey nations in Asia.
The Philippines men's national lacrosse team is the national team which represents the Philippines in international lacrosse competitions. It is organized by the Philippines Lacrosse Association, which is a member of World Lacrosse but not the Asia Pacific Lacrosse Union.
The Hong Kong men's national lacrosse team, also known as the Hong Kong men's representative lacrosse team, represents the Chinese territory of Hong Kong in international lacrosse competitions. It is organized by the Hong Kong Lacrosse Association.
The 2020 Badminton Asia Team Championships was staged at the Rizal Memorial Coliseum in Manila, Philippines, from 11 to 16 February 2020. This championships was organized by the Badminton Asia with Philippine Badminton Association as host organiser and sanctioned by the Badminton World Federation. This tournament served as the Asian qualifiers for the 2020 Thomas & Uber Cup in Denmark. Competitors could also accumulate points as part of qualification process for 2020 Summer Olympics badminton tournament in Tokyo. Indonesia and Japan were the defending champions on men's and women's category respectively. They both successfully defended their title.
