Hot Little Rocket was a Canadian indie rock band based in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. The band consisted of vocalist and guitarist Andrew Wedderburn, guitarist Aaron Smelski, drummer Joel Nye, and bassists: Mark Macarthur, Pat May, and Matthew Swann.
Hot Little Rocket formed in 1998, the band released its debut EP, Laika, in 2000, [1] [2] and followed up with Danish Documentary the following year.
The band performed at a number of venues while in Beijing, China for two weeks. [3] Their second album, Our Work and Why We Do It, was recorded in Chicago, [4] and reached No. 9 on the !earshot charts in 2003. [5]
The band's third album, How to Lose Everything, was produced by Steve Albini. [6] The band was signed to the Filed-Under music label. [7] The band released a single, "Like Killers", from the album.
In 2005, the EP Laika was reissued. [2] Hot Little Rocket disbanded following the release of a final self-titled album. Hot Little Rocket in the fall of 2009. The band played its final show September 19, 2009, at the Marquee Room in Calgary.
Wedderburn published the novel The Milk Chicken Bomb in 2007. [8] The book was a finalist for the Chapters/Books in Canada First Novel Award [9] and the ReLit Award for Fiction [10] in 2008.

The Summerlad were a band from Calgary, Alberta, Canada, formed by singer-guitarist Garrett McClure in 1999 after the demise of The Primrods. McClure was joined by guitarist Sean Grier, bassist Arran Fisher, and drummer Dean Martin. Their first album, 2001's Distance Will Be Swept Up, was released on Calgary's Catch and Release label, and received coverage in publications like exclaim!. Between 2001 and 2005, they released two singles projects, Mandarin Hand and The Golden Hammers Project. The song "Golden Hammers", which had been remixed by artists such as Jace Lasek of The Besnard Lakes in The Golden Hammers Project, reappeared on The Summerlad's second full-length album, Themes: International, released in 2005 on Saved By Radio. Themes:International received significant airplay on Canadian campus radio stations, and The Summerlad appeared at festivals such as North by Northeast in support of the album.
Matthew Swann, performing under the name Astral Swans, is a Canadian singer-songwriter from Calgary, Alberta, signed to Dan Mangan's Madic Records, an imprint of Arts & Crafts Productions. His music style has been described as "introspective late 60s folk à la Nick Drake filtered through an avant-garde 90s lens." His 2015 album, All My Favorite Singers Are Willie Nelson, was described by VICE as "a stark, beautiful project [...] steeped in 60s psych-folk mythology and loner punk iconography." His latest album, Strange Prison, was released in May 2018. Previously Matthew Swann was a member of Hot Little Rocket and Extra Happy Ghost!!!
