Hotel and Restaurant Workers' Union (Norway)

The Hotel and Restaurant Workers' Union (Norwegian : Hotell- og Restaurantarbeiderforbundet, HRAF) was a trade union representing workers in the hospitality industry in Norway.

The union was founded in 1931, as a split from the Norwegian Union of Food, Beverage and Allied Workers. [1] It affiliated to the Norwegian Confederation of Trade Unions. By 1996, the union had 14,569 members, but it was in financial difficulty, and by 2005, membership had fallen to around 10,500. [2] On 1 June 2007, it merged into the United Federation of Trade Unions. [3]

Norwegian Confederation of Trade Unions

The Norwegian Confederation of Trade Unions is a national trade union center, decidedly the largest and probably the most influential umbrella organization of labour unions in Norway. The 21 national unions affiliated to the LO have almost 900,000 members of a Norwegian population of 5 million. The majority of affiliated unions organizes traditional blue collar workers, but the largest affiliate is the Norwegian Union of Municipal and General Employees which makes up more than a third of all members. LO is affiliated to the ITUC and the ETUC. Gerd Kristiansen was elected leader on 6 May 2013 for a four-year period.

Kjartan Fløgstad

Kjartan Fløgstad is a Norwegian author. Fløgstad was born in the industrial city of Sauda in Ryfylke, Rogaland. He studied literature and linguistics at the University of Bergen. Subsequently, he worked for a period as an industrial worker and as a sailor before he debuted as a poet with his collection of poems titled Valfart (Pilgrimage) in 1968. He received the Nordic Council's Literature Prize for his 1977 novel Dalen Portland. Other major works include Fyr og flamme, Kron og mynt, Grand Manila and Grense Jakobselv.
