Hotline is a 2014 documentary feature film written and directed by Tony Shaff. The film explores the intense connections that are made between strangers over the telephone, and explores these anonymous conversations people are often too hesitant to have with the people closest to them. The film stars Miss Cleo, Jeff Ragsdale, Jamie Blaine, and Tonya Jone Miller. [1] [2]

The film was first shown in Toronto at Hot Docs in April 2014, where it was an official selection and audience and jury favorite. [3] On August 9, 2014 Hotline won First Prize for Best Feature Documentary at the Rhode Island International Film Festival. [4] On May 9, 2014, the Brooklyn Film Festival announced that Hotline had been selected for inclusion in its prestigious feature film line-up. [5]

Synopsis

Hotline explores telephone hotlines throughout the United States. [1] [2] [6] Among those profiled Brad Becker of the GLBT Hotline, Youree Dell Harris (aka Miss Cleo, formerly of the Psychic Readers Network), and the Homework Hotline in Nashville. Additionally, the telephone volunteers at the Anti-Violence Project are profiled, as are Alan Ross of the Samaritans in New York, crisis counselor Jamie Blaine of Nashville, Pastor Brent Furlong of Go Time Ministries in Pennsylvania, and Tonya Jone Miller of the Bay City Blues sex-line in Portland, Oregon. Another telephone sex worker known only as Gypsy is seen, as is Jeff Ragsdale, the eponymous Jeff, One Lonely Guy hotline out of New York.

Production

Shaff, a former telephone psychic and suicide prevention hotline volunteer as well as reality television producer and director, shot the film at various locations across the United States. [7] [8] In post-production, Shaff worked with both the film's composer, Jess Stroup, and the film's editor, Charlie Dugan, on a score which utilized an analog dial tone theme. "The jumping off point for working on the score for Hotline came after I listened to a Radiolab piece about phone phreaking that featured a blind boy with a difficult school and home life who said that he found comfort in the sound of a telephone dial tone," Shaff explains. [9] Shaff used the crowd source funding website, Kickstarter, to finance portions of the project.

Release and distribution

Hotline screened at IFC Center on November 17, 2014, as part of DOC NYC festival. [10] Gravitas Ventures released the film in select theaters and on iTunes and VOD on November 18, 2014.

Awards

On August 9, 2014, Hotline won First Prize for Best Feature Documentary at the Rhode Island International Film Festival. [4]

<i>Jeff, One Lonely Guy</i>

Jeff, One Lonely Guy is a 2012 nonfiction book by Jeff Ragsdale. It was published on March 20, 2012 by New Harvest. Dave Eggers selected the book for inclusion in The Best American Nonrequired Reading 2012, and it was a GQ 2012 "Book of the Year". In 2014 Amitava Kumar included portions of Jeff, One Lonely Guy in his newly released book, A Matter of Rats: A Short Biography of Patna. Kumar previously interviewed Ragsdale and wrote about him in The New York Times.

Jeffrey Charles Ragsdale was an American author, documentary filmmaker, actor and stand-up comedian. In 2011 he posted a flyer in New York City as a "social experiment", stating his phone number and asking people to call him, describing himself as "Jeff, one lonely guy". He was overwhelmed with thousands of calls after photos of the flyer were posted on the internet. The experience led to his 2012 book Jeff, One Lonely Guy, and indirectly to a 2013 pilot episode for a reality television show, Being Noticed, and a starring role in the 2014 documentary Hotline.

Co-founded by Thom Powers and Raphaela Neihausen, the festival is the country's largest documentary film festival with over 300 films and events and 250 special guests. By 2014, DOC NYC had become America's largest documentary film festival and voted by MovieMaker magazine as one of the "top five coolest documentary film festivals in the world". Nicole Newnham is an American documentary film producer, writer, and director known for the Oscar-nominated movie Crip Camp (2020) which she co-directed and produced with James LeBrecht, and the multiple-Emmy-nominated film The Rape of Europa. With the Australian artist/director Lynette Wallworth, she produced the virtual reality work Collisions, which won the 2017 Emmy for Outstanding New Approaches to Documentary, and Awavena, which won the 2020 Emmy for Outstanding New Approaches to Documentary.
