How I Wonder What You Are is a 2010 drama film directed by Udaya Dharmawardhana and Chinthana Dharmadasa. The film is a low budget [4] production and is claimed to be from the first independent cinema in Sri Lanka. [3]

Plot

The plot is a story of two youths who are engaged on a soul searching mission. D (played by Prasanna Mahaganage) is a youth of 29 [4] who is frustrated with life not having a reason to live. [5] He yearns for some form of connection, when Kathy (played by Purnima Mohandiram) visits him. She comes to D after a little crash with her partner KK (played by Namal Jayasinghe). Kathy is waiting for a call from her boyfriend to confirm that he still needs her, but the call never comes. [5] D and Kathy spend a day waiting, yet nothing happens. D and Kathy make desperate attempts to reveal their emotions to each other, but they soon realize that they have forgotten the language of connectivity. [2] However, D began to create dreams around her. Unable to face the trauma of nothingness and emptiness, Kathy leaves, leaving D behind in a state more heartbroken than before and waiting for her to return. [2]

The movie was shot in numerous locations in Colombo, Sri Lanka. The directors raised their budget with the collaboration of colleagues. Several cast and crew members worked without pay.

Music

The original score was composed by Jayanth Dharmawardhana. The theme song of the movie "Adare Anshu Mathrayak" (Descending from Paradise) is performed by Indrachapa Liyanage and written by Asoka Handagama.

Release

The film was officially premiered at the National Film Corporation theater on April 30, 2010, for a selected audience. Producers claim that they are going to use alternative methods for public screening. [3]

Prasanna Vithanage Sri Lankan filmmaker (born 1962)

Udaya Prasanna Vithanage is a Sri Lankan filmmaker. He is considered one of the pioneers of the third generation of the Sri Lankan cinema. He has directed eight feature films including Death on a Full Moon Day (1997), August Sun (2003), Flowers of the Sky (2008) & With You, Without You (2012) and won many prestigious national and international awards and have also been commercially successful in Sri Lanka. In his early theatre work, he translated and produced plays by international writers, adapted works of world literature to film. He has battled against the censorship in Sri Lanka and worked as an educator of cinema who has conducted many Master classes in the subcontinent for young filmmakers and enthusiasts.

The expulsion of non-resident Tamils from Colombo was an incident which took place on June 7, 2007 when 376 ethnic Tamil refugees living in Colombo were deported from the city by the Sri Lankan Police. The evicted were sent back to Jaffna, Vavuniya, Trincomalee and Batticaloa, where they are originally from, in several buses with a police escort. However the buses only went as far as the town of Vavuniya and the evicted Tamils were forced to stay in a detention camp. The President asked those who were evicted to come back to Colombo and ordered an investigation into the incident

Ganga Addara was a 1980 Sinhalese language film directed by Sumitra Peiris and produced by Sumathi Films. The film stars Vasanthi Chathurani and late Vijaya Kumaratunga in the lead roles. Adapted from a novel by Letitia Botejue, its script was written by veteran director Tissa Abeysekara. The music and English lyrics were composed by Nimal Mendis. It was translated into Sinhala by Augustus Vinayagaratnam and was sung by Vijaya Kumaratunga, who also made his mark as a playback singer. Ganga Addara, which was the second production of Sumathi Films was set in Kandy, colonial Sri Lanka.
