James Howard Sanderford [1] (born October 18,1935) is a former member of the Alabama State House of Representatives. [2] Sanderford,a Republican,represented the 20th district from 1989 to 2022. The district composes most of southeast Huntsville.
Representative Sanderford received his B.S. Degree in Accounting from Mississippi State University where he was active with student government. After serving as an officer in the U.S. Marine Corps,Howard Sanderford became an executive with IBM and is now President of Computer Leasing Company,Inc. He and his wife Dot are active in their church,First Baptist Church of Huntsville.
Representative Sanderford has served as past President of the Huntsville Rotary Club,past Chairman of the Madison County Republican Executive Committee,past co-chairman of the Chamber of Commerce Free Enterprise Committee,past Vice President of the Metropolitan YMCA Board,and was a member of the Alabama Commission on Aerospace Sciences and the Alabama Management Improvement Program.
He is currently a board member of the Alabama Space and Rocket Center,Volunteers of America of North Alabama,YMCA,Alabama Men's Hall of Fame,and Alabama Board of Medical Scholarship Awards.
Howard Sanderford received primary opposition by two political newcomers in his bid for a seventh term in the Alabama legislature –David Pinkleton,a 23-year-old University of Alabama in Huntsville (UAH) student and former Republican Women of Huntsville President Frances Taylor. Both Pinkleton and Taylor focused their campaigns on individual property rights in response to the Huntsville Housing Authority's move into south Huntsville. [3] Sanderford won the June 1 primary with 57% or 5724 votes and avoided a runoff. [4]
Representative Sanderford serves on the Boards,Agencies &Commissions Committee (chair),Judiciary Committee (Vice-chair),Madison County Legislation,Sunset Committee (Co-chair),Joint Legislative State Parks Committee,and Joint Legislative Medal of Honor Committee (chair). He also serves on the Southern Legislative Committee (executive committee) and the Energy Council.

A Southern Democrat,Sparkman served in the United States House of Representatives from 1937 to 1946 and the United States Senate from 1946 until 1979. The Alabama Republican Party is the state affiliate of the Republican Party in Alabama. It is the dominant political party in Alabama. The state party is governed by the Alabama Republican Executive Committee. The committee usually meets twice a year. As of the February 23,2019 meeting in Birmingham,the committee is composed of 463 members. Most of the committee's members are elected in district elections across Alabama. The district members are elected in the Republican Primary once every four years,with the most recent election for the committee having been on June 5,2018. The new committee takes office following the general election in November 2018. In addition,all 67 county GOP chairmen have automatic seats as voting members. The state chairman can appoint 10 members. Each county committee can appoint bonus members based on a formula that theoretically could add 312 seats,although that formula currently calls for only about 50 seats.

The 2022 United States Senate election in Alabama was held on November 8,2022,to elect a member of the United States Senate to represent the State of Alabama. Incumbent Senator Richard Shelby was first elected in 1986 and re-elected in 1992 as a Democrat before switching to Republican in 1994. In his most recent election in 2016,he was re-elected with 64% of the vote over Democrat Ron Crumpton. In February 2021,Shelby announced that he would not seek re-election to a seventh term,which resulted in the first open Senate seat since 1996 and the first in this seat since 1968.
