Hugh Vivian Taylor (1894-1981) was a prominent Australian architect, construction engineer and acoustic consultant, known for his work in both fields. [1] [2]
Born in 1894, Taylor's early education was at Swinburne Technical College, but his architectural career was forged under unique circumstances. Following service in World War I, Taylor could not afford a formal apprenticeship, so he worked on building sites saving money and eventually passing the Royal Institute of British Architects exams to qualify as an architect in 1921. [3] By 1925, he had returned from London to Australia and formed the architectural firm H. Vivian Taylor & Soilleux with Garnet Argyle Soilleux, a collaboration that lasted for many years. In 1933 Best Overend, another prominent Melbourne architect joined the firm, and for several years, the practice operated as Taylor, Soilleux & Overend. [1] After Overend left in 1937, the firm reverted to its previous name of Taylor, Soilleux. Taylor's partnership with Soilleux, and the earlier experiences gained while working with modernist architect Wells Coates in London, brought a modern, functional aesthetic to his architectural designs, marrying form and function.
His groundbreaking work in the field of architectural acoustics coincided with of sound being introduced to films, which spurred a need for acoustic solutions in preexisting cinemas and theatres in Melbourne and around Australia. [2] Over the course of his career, he collaborated with other architects as well as theatre and cinema owners to optimise the acoustic environment of over 400 venues across Australia. [1] Some of his most notable projects include his work as an acoustic consultant on the refurbishment of Melbourne's Her Majesty's Theatre, the Houses of Parliament in South Australia and radio studios for the ABC. Hugh Vivian Taylor's contributions advancing both architecture and acoustic design in Australia were formally acknowledged when he was elected as the first Fellow of the Australian Acoustical Society in 1972. Also, the Association of Australasian Acoustical Consultants (AAAC) gives out an award named after him each year. [4] His firm's legacy has been compromised by the number of theatres and cinemas that he worked on being pulled down in recent decades to make way for other types of buildings. One of the best examples that remains today is the heritage listed Rivoli theatre in Hawthorn East. [5]

Berg and Alexandra was an Australian architecture firm from 1962 to 1996, based in Chelsea House, on Flemington Road in North Melbourne. The firm was formed by a partnership between two Melbourne architects Raymond Berg, born in 1913 in South Melbourne, and Douglas Alexandra, born in 1922 in Shepparton, Victoria. Berg retired in 1983 and died five years later, with Alexandra retiring in 1996 and selling the practice to Hudson and Wardrop. Berg and Alexandra were among the first post-war Australian architects to produce modernist works. They were heralded for their simple, stripped back designs that broke away from ‘the old familiar features’ of Australian Architecture.
Cairo Flats, also colloquially known as Cairo Bachelor Flats or Cairo, is a heritage-listed apartment building in the Melbourne inner city suburb of Fitzroy. Cairo Flats derives its name from the Egyptian capital city. While several theories have been proposed regarding the reason for this name, no official documentation exists to substantiate any of them, leaving the matter open to speculation. Cairo Flats is situated opposite the Royal Exhibition Building in the Carlton Gardens, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. As a result, Cairo also sits within the World Heritage Environs Area (WHEA) overlay that surrounds this precinct.
Peter Brian Hall was an Australian architect active in Sydney and elsewhere from the 1950s to the early 1990s. Schooled in the tenets of modernism his practice was also informed by a strong sense of the importance of function and context in design. During his early years Hall was the recipient of numerous education scholarships and bursaries, most notably a traineeship and then employment with the office of the New South Wales Government Architect, a source of highly creative architecture during the 1960s. However, Hall is best known for completing the Sydney Opera House after the resignation of its original architect, Jørn Utzon, in February 1966. At the age of 34, he was invited by the Government Architect to act as design architect in the newly formed consortium Hall Todd & Littlemore to resolve the issues which had led to Utzon's resignation, principally the design of all the interiors and the enclosing glass walls of the unfinished building. The Opera House opened in October 1973 and despite its subsequent success as Sydney's most popular performance venue, understanding of the work of Hall and his team has been coloured by the controversial circumstances of their appointment. For Hall, both personally and professionally, Utzon's legacy was a poisoned chalice – an unprecedented challenge to complete the building to a standard commensurate with its sublime exterior, but one that brought little recognition during his lifetime.

After completing his architectural studies at the University of Melbourne in the early 1920s, he embarked on a successful career, initially forming a partnership with fellow architect and acoustic consultant Hugh Vivian Taylor in 1925. The firm, H. Vivian Taylor & Soilleux, became a leader in Australia, in theatre and cinema design and acoustics during the interwar period, contributing to the design or alteration of hundreds of theatres and cinemas. In 1933 Best Overend, another prominent Melbourne architect joined the firm, and for several years, the practice operated as Taylor, Soilleux & Overend. This partnership continued until 1937, when Overend departed, and the firm returned to its previous name.
