Bodyboarding is a water sport in which the surfer rides a bodyboard on the crest, face, and curl of a wave which is carrying the surfer towards the shore. Bodyboarding is also referred to as Boogieboarding due to the invention of the "Boogie Board" by Tom Morey. The average bodyboard consists of a short, rectangular piece of hydrodynamic foam. Qualification for surfing at the 2020 Summer Olympics will be based on the performances at two editions of the ISA World Surfing Games, the World Surf League Championship Tour, and the Pan American Games. Twenty athletes per gender must qualify for the Games, with only a maximum of two each per NOC. Host nation Japan has been entitled to use a single quota place each in both men's and women's shortboard. If Japan directly qualifies in any of the tournaments, the host country place(s) shall be reallocated to the next highest ranked eligible athlete at the 2020 World Surfing Games.

The 2019 World Surf League Championship Tour (CT) is a professional, competitive surfing league run by the World Surf League (WSL), starting on 3 April 2019. Men and women compete in separate tours, with events taking place from early April to mid-December at various surfing locations around the world. Surfers receive points based on performance at each event. The surfer with the most points at the end of the tour is declared the 2019 World Surf League Champion.
The 2019 ISA World Surfing Games were held at Kisakihama Beach in Miyazaki, Japan, from 7 to 15 September 2019. The event was organised by the International Surfing Association (ISA).
The 2020 ISA World Surfing Games will take place across the El Sunzal and La Bocana waves at Surf City in El Salvador in 2020. The event was originally scheduled to be held from 9 to 17 May, but was postponed due to the 2020 coronavirus pandemic. A new date has yet to be announced, but it is hoped that it will take place during the second half of 2020. The event is organised by the International Surfing Association (ISA).
