Hugo Vandenberghe (born in 1942), is a Belgian politician and a professor at Katholieke Universiteit Leuven (Law Faculty).
From 1973 to 1977, Hugo Vandenberghe served as advisor in several cabinets of Minister Leo Tindemans. From 1984 to 1990, he was member of the European Committee on Human Rights in Strasbourg. In 1991, he was co-opted Senator, and, in 1999, he was elected Senator.[1]
Hugo Vandenberghe was the Fraction Leader of the Christen-Democratisch en Vlaams (CD&V) from 1995 to 2003. Following the federal elections of 2003, he became Vice President of the Senate and President of the Senate's Justice Committee. Although he sits on several Senate committees and has served as President of the Special Investigating Committee on Organized Crime, Hugo Vandenberghe is regarded as a Law and Justice specialist within the CD&V. In particular, he is known for advocating amendments to existing legislation and for proposing new legislation.
Although Hugo Vandenberghe has a conservative profile within the CD&V, he has been considered to be a negotiator. For instance, in the ethical debates on gay marriage and euthanasia since the 1990s, he has striven for multilateral agreement, although not always successfully. Since 1999, when the Christelijke Volkspartij (CVP, renamed Christen-Democratisch en Vlaams in 2001) became an opposition party, Hugo Vandenberghe has been opposed to the new Belgian law on euthanasia of the Liberal-Socialist-Green coalition.

The Senate is one of the two chambers of the bicameral Federal Parliament of Belgium, the other being the Chamber of Representatives. It is considered to be the "upper house" of the Federal Parliament. Created in 1831 as a chamber fully equal to the Chamber of Representatives, it has undergone several reforms in the past, most notably in 1993 and 2014. The 2014 elections were the first without a direct election of senators. Instead, the new Senate is composed of members of community and regional parliaments and co-opted members. It is a chamber of the communities and regions and serves as a platform for discussion and reflection about matters between these federated entities. The Senate today plays a minor role in the federal legislative process. However, the Senate, together with the Chamber, has full competence for the Constitution and legislation on the organization and functioning of the Federal State and the federated entities. Since the reform of 2014, it holds about ten plenary sessions a year.
Flemish political parties operate in the whole Flemish Community, which covers the unilingual Flemish Region and the bilingual Brussels-Capital Region. In the latter, they compete with French-speaking parties that all also operate in Wallonia. There are very few parties that operate on a national level in Belgium. Flanders generally tends to vote for right-wing, conservative parties, whereas in French-speaking Belgium the socialist party is usually the most successful one.

Nova Civitas claimed at its founding to be completely independent, although it was recognized and supported by the Flemish Liberal Party (VLD). The Founding Chairman of Nova Civitas, Boudewijn Bouckaert, was a long-time board member of the VLD.

Johan Maria Gerardus Vandeurzen is a Belgian politician, member of Christen-Democratisch en Vlaams (CD&V), a centrist Flemish Christian Democratic party.
Federal elections were held in Belgium on 13 June 2010, during the midst of the 2007-11 Belgian political crisis. After the fall of the previous Leterme II Government over the withdrawal of Open Flemish Liberals and Democrats from the government the King dissolved the legislature and called new elections. The New Flemish Alliance, led by Bart De Wever, emerged as the plurality party with 27 seats, just one more than the francophone Socialist Party, led by Elio Di Rupo, which was the largest party in the Wallonia region and Brussels. It took a world record 541 days until a government was formed, resulting in a government led by Di Rupo.
Etienne Adolf Schouppe is a Belgian politician. He is a member of the Christen-Democratisch en Vlaams party. Before his entry into politics, he was executive manager of the National Railway Company of Belgium. Schouppe was a member of the Belgian Senate from 2003 to 2010 and since 2008 the State Secretary for Mobility. At the local level Schouppe was mayor of Liedekerke for eleven years. In 2010 he retired from politics. In 2010 he was also accused of insider trading for having sold KBC and Dexia shares with special information.
Federal elections were held in Belgium on 25 May 2014. All 150 members of the Chamber of Representatives were elected, whereas the Senate was no longer directly elected following the 2011–2012 state reform. These were the first elections held under King Philippe's reign.
Paul Tant was a Belgian politician. He was a member of Christen-Democratisch en Vlaams. He was mayor of Kruishoutem from 1977 until 2009.
Jeanne Driessen was a Christen-Democratisch en Vlaams politician when the party was still known as the Christelijke Volkspartij. Her early work in the party started in 1924 and her father Louis had served as mayor of Maaseik. She was first elected to a position in 1927 and served as a Sénatrice from 1950 to 1965. The Belgian Senate noted her death at 105.
