Hugues Gentillon (born December 17, 1974) is a Haitian film director, screenwriter, producer, and scientist. [1] He is the founder of Yugy Pictures Entertainment, a film production company based in the United States. [2] [3] [4]

Biography

Gentillon was born on December 17, 1974, in Port-au-Prince, Haiti to Haitian parents. As both his parents were entrepreneurs, he attended several private schools in Haiti until graduating from high school, when he left the country to attend university in the United States. After initially studying at Miami Dade College and University of Florida in Florida, he transferred to several other universities in North America and Europe, including New York Film Academy, Academy of Art University, Medical University of Lodz, and Université Libre de Bruxelles, eventually graduating with a Master of Fine Arts degree. In 2014 he screened his MFA thesis film Love Me Haiti at several film festivals, including Festival de Cannes, [5] [6] [7] Zanzibar International Film Festival (ZIFF), [8] Boston Cinema/Motion Pictures Association of Haiti (MPAH), [9] and Bahamas International Film Festival. [10] The film won Gentillon several awards, including the 2014 Interstudent special award and the 2014 MPAH award for Best Short Film. [11] [12] [13] [14] A year later Gentillon attended the Festival de Cannes 2015, where he promoted and pre-marketed his film The Pearl of Wisdom, a fictional film loosely inspired by a series of events that took place during the Age of Reason (1600-1800).

He received the Paul Robeson African Diaspora best film award at FESPACO in Ouagadougou in 2007, 2009, and 2011. He also received numerous awards and accolades at festivals for his documentaries and fiction movies. He was president of the Haitian Filmmakers Association (AHC) from 2005 to 2009.

Love Me Haiti is a 2014 fictional short film directed by Hugues Gentillon. Love Me Haiti co-stars Aurelia Khazan, Pierre-Louis Dieufaite, Deoud Gentillon, and François Meknes. The script was written by Gentillon, Alexander Stuart, Joyce Mccauley-Benner, and Joe Vetromile. Love Me Haiti was recorded in Port-au-Prince, Haiti. The film won the 2014 Haiti's Oscar for best short film. Love Me Haiti also won Best Interpretation for the Dikalo Peace Award with actress Aurelia Khazan for bringing the character Marie Forstner to life. The young actress collected the prize at the prestigious Palais des Festivals et des Congrès in Cannes, France. The award was co-presented by Nord-Sud Développement and UNESCO.
