The Triple J Hottest 100 is an annual music listener poll hosted by the government-funded, national Australian radio station, Triple J. The public is invited to vote for their favourite Australian and alternative music of the year, in an online poll conducted two weeks prior to the new year. Since its inception in 1989, the 100 most popular songs were counted down from 12pm on Australia Day. From 2018 however, the countdown has been held on the fourth weekend of January due to opposition to Australia Day's celebratory commemoration of British colonisation. On the day after the Hottest 100, Triple J plays the Hottest 200 from 10am.
Powderfinger were an Australian rock band formed in Brisbane in 1989. From 1992 until their break-up in 2010 the line-up consisted of vocalist Bernard Fanning, guitarists Darren Middleton and Ian Haug, bass guitarist John Collins, and drummer Jon Coghill. The group's third studio album Internationalist peaked at No. 1 on the ARIA Albums Chart in September 1998. They followed with four more number-one studio albums in a row: Odyssey Number Five, Vulture Street, Dream Days at the Hotel Existence, and Golden Rule. Their Top Ten hit singles are "My Happiness" (2000), "(Baby I've Got You) On My Mind" (2003), and "Lost and Running" (2007). Powderfinger earned a total of eighteen ARIA Awards, making them the second-most awarded band behind Silverchair. Ten Powderfinger albums and DVDs certified multiple-platinum, with Odyssey Number Five – their most successful album – achieving eightfold platinum certification for shipment of over 560,000 units.
Australian hip hop traces its origins to the early 1980s and is largely inspired by hip hop and other predominantly African-American musical genres from the United States. As the form matured, Australian hip hop has become a commercially viable style of music that is no longer restricted to the creative underground, with artists such as 1200 Techniques, Kerser, Manu Crooks, Briggs, Baker Boy, Koolism, Hilltop Hoods and Bliss n Eso achieving notable fame. Australian hip-hop is still primarily released through independent record labels, which are often owned and operated by the artists themselves. Despite its genesis as an offshoot of American hip hop, Australian hip hop has developed a distinct personality that reflects its evolution as an Australian musical style.
"Swing" is the lead single from Savage's debut solo album, Moonshine. It was released in January 2005 and went on to reach number one in the New Zealand singles chart. In 2008, it was released as a single in the United States with a re-done version featuring Soulja Boy, as well as an additional version featuring Pitbull. Both remixes are featured on the rapper's second studio album Savage Island. There are also covers of this song by metalcore bands Drop Dead, Gorgeous and Miss May I.
The Hard Road is the fourth studio album by Australian hip hop group, Hilltop Hoods. The album was released on the first of April 2006 by Obese Records and debuted at number one on the Australia ARIA Albums Chart. The album contains the top 20 single, "Clown Prince". The album achieved Gold status on 8 April 2006, a week after release and has now surpassed Platinum status . The album won the Triple J J Award in 2006. The award was announced on 1 December. Five songs from the album placed on the annual Triple J Hottest 100 chart announced on 26 January 2007. Songs "Recapturing the Vibe", "Stopping All Stations", "What a Great Night", "Clown Prince" and "The Hard Road" placed No. 77, No. 56, No. 41, No. 23, and No. 3 respectively. "An Audience with the Devil" samples the spoken parts from the Millennium episode "Somehow, Satan Got Behind Me".
Obese Records was a record label that released music from the Australian hip hop genre. It was the largest Australian independent hip hop label, including performers Pegz, Thundamentals and Dialectrix. Obese Records also operated two retail stores in Melbourne, a record distribution company, a soul imprint named Plethora Records, and operates the artists' management and touring company Obese Records Artist Management.
Tim Levinson, better known by the stage name Urthboy, is an Australian hip-hop MC and producer from New South Wales. He is widely known for his solo music under the moniker Urthboy, as a founding member of the hip-hop group The Herd, and for co-founding and managing the Elefant Traks record label. Levinson has released five solo albums: Distant Sense of Random Menace (2004), The Signal (2007), Spitshine (2009), Smokey's Haunt (2012) and The Past Beats Inside Me Like a Second Heartbeat (2016); as well as five studio albums with The Herd.
The Signal is the second album from The Herd member Urthboy and was released on the 14 July 2007. The album features production from Australian artists El Gusto of Hermitude fame and Count Bounce from TZU. It also features collaborations from several prominent Australian MCs and Musicians. The album was released on CD and double vinyl.
Tirren Staaf, otherwise known as Pegz, is an Australian hip hop artist and producer hailing from Melbourne, Victoria. He is the CEO of Obese Records — the record label responsible for artists such as Hilltop Hoods, Downsyde, and Bias B.
An album released by Australian hip hop artist MC Pegz on 15 October 2007. This recording features appearances from Australian MCs Drapht, Funkoars, Muph, Vents and others. Californian MC Planet Asia also collaborates on the track "Diligent Music". It peaked at No. 70 on the ARIA Album Chart, No. 10 on the ARIA Urban Album Chart and No. 4 on the ARIA Hitseekers Albums chart. The albums tracks were featured on national radio station, Triple J. According to Khalil Hegarty of The Age declared that Pegz "has made the Australian hip-hop scene his own." During 2008 he toured Australia to promote the album.
Silence the Sirens is the second album from Muph & Plutonic and was released on the 21 November 2006. The album took 10 months to produce and features guest performances from several Australian MCs and Musicians, including Fatlip, Pegz, Urthboy, Ivens (Awakenings), Raph Boogie & BVA and Red Ghost. The album is considered a classic in the Australian Hip Hop scene, due its blend of high quality production and polished lyricism. It peaked at No. 11 on the ARIA Urban Album Chart and was featured as Triple Js Album of the Week.
Horrorshow is an Australian Pop Music duo from the Inner West area of Sydney. The duo consists of Adit (producer) and Solo (vocals). Together with Spit Syndicate, Jackie Onassis and Joyride, Horrorshow are members of the One Day crew from the inner-west of Sydney.
...And Then Tomorrow Came is the third album from Muph & Plutonic and was released in July 2008.
Pez is an Australian hip hop recording artist from Melbourne, Australia. He attended Kew High School in Melbourne's eastern suburbs. His debut album, A Mind of My Own peaked at No. 19 on the ARIA Urban albums chart.
