Hyder Ally (or Hyder Alley) was a merchant ship launched in the United States in 1815. She came to the United Kingdom in 1816. In 1817 she rescued the crew of another vessel. She was wrecked in 1821.

Career

Hyder Alley arrived in Falmouth in October 1816. She sailed from Gravesend, Kent on 3 December, bound for New York.

Hyder Ally first appeared in the volume of Lloyd's Register (LR) for 1816. [1]

On 27 February 1817, the crew of William, of Hull, Baker, master, abandoned their vessel in the Atlantic as being leaky, much damaged, and in want of provisions; she had left Hull on 28 November, bound for New York. Hyder Alley, also New York-bound, took off the crew. However, eight men from Hyder Alley, Howe, master, volunteered to try to bring William in to a port. William, with her crew from Hyder Alley, arrived at Newport, Rhode Island on 10 March. [3] [4] [lower-alpha 1]

Fate

A gale at Cork on 28 December 1821 drove Hyder Ally (a hulk) on shore, doing much damage. [5] [6]

She continued to trade until 1841 when she wrecked at Nova Scotia.

Emma was a merchant vessel launched at Calcutta in 1809 that in 1810 served as a government armed ship in the British invasion of Île de France. In 1811 she sailed to England where she was sold. She then became a transport and later a whaler. Between 1815 and 1853 she made 11 whaling voyages. She was then sold and became a merchantman on the England-Australia run. Between 1851 and 1853 she made one more whaling voyage to the South Seas fisheries. She then returned to the England-Australia trade. In 1857 her home port became Hull, and she became a Greenland whaler, though that role may have begun as early as 1855. She was converted in 1864 to a screw steamer but was lost in April while seal hunting.

Rambler was launched in America in 1812. The British captured her in 1813 as she was returning to America from Manila. She then briefly became a West Indiaman. In 1815 she became a whaler in the Southern Fishery. She made four complete whaling voyages and was wrecked on her fifth.

True Briton was launched at Pont Neuf, Quebec, in 1811. Her primary trade was sailing between Britain and New Brunswick, but she also sailed to Jamaica, and made two voyages to India. Her crew abandoned her in the Atlantic in 1822.

Earl of Buckinghamshire was built at Montreal in 1814. She sailed to Britain and made two voyages to India. She then started trading between Liverpool and North America. In 1821 she carried some 600 settlers from Greenock to Quebec. Her crew abandoned her in the North Atlantic in October 1822 and she was wrecked in November when she drifted ashore at Galway Bay, Ireland.

Earl Fauconberg was launched at Whitby in 1765. From 1784 on she made numerous voyages as a Greenland whaler. She was lost there in 1821.

Waterloo was launched in 1815 at Sunderland. She traded with Hamburg, Trieste, and Tobago, before sailing to the Cape of Good Hope with emigrants. She was lost at Fish Hoek on 25 October 1821; the wreckage and cargo was sold there on 6 November.

Brailsford was launched at Kingston upon Hull in 1811. She traded widely, including making several voyages to India under a license from the British East India Company (EIC). She suffered mishaps in 1823 and 1826 and was finally wrecked on 19 April 1831.

Brilliant was launched at Whitehaven in 1807. Initially, she was a West Indiaman. Then from 1816 she started sailing to India under a license from the British East India Company (EIC). She grounded in February or on 10 March 1821 at Coringa while sailing from London to Bengal. She was refloated, repaired, and sold locally.

Olive Branch was launched in 1818 at Cowes. She was one of several vessels that a gale wrecked at the Cape of Good Hope, on 21 July 1822. She returned to service and on some or more of her voyages to the Cape she sailed to Mauritius under a licence from the British East India Company (EIC). She burnt in November 1843 while sailing between Quebec and London.

Fame was launched in India in 1786. She was sold to Portuguese owners. A French privateer captured but the Royal Navy recaptured her in 1794. She then became a West Indiaman, sailing from Liverpool. Between 1796 and 1804 she made three voyages as a slave ship. She then returned to the West Indies trade. From 1818 on she was a whaler in the Greenland whale fishery, sailing from Whitby and then Hull. She burnt in 1823 while outward bound on a whaling voyage.

Albion Packet was a schooner launched at Berwick by Gowan. She sailed primarily along Britain's coasts, and later to the Baltic. She disappeared from the registers between 1816 and 1822, when she reappeared as Albion. Circa 1827 she became Albion Packet again. She underwent two maritime mishaps, one in August 1802 and one circa December 1827, before being wrecked on 17 November 1832 near Orford High Light.

John Tobin was a ship launched in 1809 at Hull. In 1810 she recaptured a British vessel and in November 1812 she repelled an attack by an American privateer in a single ship action. From 1816 John Tobin made three voyages to India, sailing under a license from the British East India Company (EIC). She then sailed to Calabar, West Africa. She left there on 28 November 1821 and was never heard of again.

Nimble was built at Plymouth in 1813. Initially she engaged in a triangular trade between Africa, Brazil, and Britain. She then sailed between Britain and the eastern Mediterranean. She was twice plundered by pirates, once while on her way to Brazil and the some years later as she was on her way to Smyrna. In 1824 her owners had her lengthened. In 1828–1830 Nimble sailed to Mauritius under a licence from the British East India Company (EIC). She was last listed in 1833.

<i>David Shaw</i> (1805 ship) UK merchant ship 1805–1826

David Shaw was launched at Whitehaven in 1805. She quickly became a West Indiaman. Between 1817 and 1821 she made two voyages to New South Wales, returning from the second voyage via Batavia and Mauritius. She suffered a major maritime incident in 1822. Prior to 3 July 1826, her crew abandoned her at sea waterlogged.

Harriet was launched in Massachusetts in 1809. The British captured her and on 13 January 1813 a prize court condemned her. New owners retained her name. She became a West Indiaman, and made one voyage to New South Wales. Between 1818 and 1832 she made four complete voyages as a whaler in the British southern whale fishery. She was lost in October 1833 in the Seychelles on her fifth whaling voyage.

Harmony was launched in 1798 in Lancaster as a West Indiaman. Between 1805 and 1807 she sailed to the Pacific on a privateering voyage. Early in the voyage she was engaged in a single ship action in which her target repelled the attack, killing Harmony's master and inflicting severe casualties on her crew. Although Harmony returned to trading with the West Indies, in 1817 she made one voyage to India under a licence from the British East India Company. On her return she traded between Hull and Petersburg, and Quebec. New owners in 1821 decided to use her as a whaler in the northern whale fishery. She was lost there on her first whaling voyage.

Lady Forbes was launched at Leith in 1799. She became a West Indiaman, sailing under a series of letters of marque. She survived a major hurricane and an attack by pirates. From 1819, she was a whaler in the British northern whale fishery. She made three annual whaling voyages before she was lost in 1822 when ice crushed her.
