Hywel Rhys Thomas CBE FREng FRS FLSW MAE is the current President of the Learned Society of Wales. [1] He also works as an academic, currently serving as Professor of Civil Engineering and Founder Director of the Geoenvironmental Research Centre at Cardiff University. [2]
Hywel R. Thomas is renowned for his research into the behaviour of unsaturated soils. [3] He has expertise in high speed aerodynamics, data analysis, geoenvironmental and geotechnical engineering, [4] and his main research interests are "Coupled Processes in the Ground" [2] and other geoenvironmental issues, such as flow problems in soils in rocks, nuclear waste, land regeneration and sustainability. [2] In his work, he develops sophisticated computer models, and with the use of these models, he investigates how chemicals and gases move under a range of conditions of temperature, water pressure, and mechanical forces. [4]
His academic career began in 1978, when he worked as a Senior Research Assistant at University College, Swansea. In 1980, he joined Cardiff University, where he worked as a lecturer, senior lecturer and reader until 1995, when he was appointed Professor of Civil Engineering at Cardiff University, a post that he still currently holds.. [5] Throughout his time at Cardiff University, he has also held the posts of Senior Deputy Head of the Cardiff School of Engineering (1999 to 2002) [5] and Director of the Cardiff School of Engineering (2002 to 2010). [2] He was also a Pro-Vice Chancellor at Cardiff University from 2010 to 2018 [2] and since 1996 he has been the Founder Director of Cardiff University's Geoenvironmental Research Centre [5]
Outside his academic work, he has worked extensively with some of the agencies of the United Nations. These include the United Nations Industrial Development Organisation (UNIDO), the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and UNESCO. [2]
He is also currently a Distinguished Research Professor at Swansea University. [4]
He was elected a Fellow of the Learned Society of Wales in 2011 and is currently serves as the 3rd President of the Society [1]

Michael Batty is a British academic currently appointed as Bartlett Professor of Planning in The Bartlett at University College London. His work spans the fields of urban planning, geography and spatial data science. He has been Director—now Chairman—of the Centre for Advanced Spatial Analysis, set up when he was appointed to UCL in 1995. His research and the work of CASA is focused on computer models of city systems. He was awarded the William Alonso Prize of the Regional Science Association in 2011 for his book Cities and Complexity, the same prize a second time for his book The New Science of Cities in 2017–2018, the University Consortium GIS Research Award in 2012, and the Lauréat Prix International de Géographie Vautrin Lud, the so-called 'Nobel for geography', in 2013. In 2015, he was awarded the Founder's Medal of the Royal Geographical Society and in 2016, the Gold Medal of the Royal Town Planning Institute (RTPI). He also received the Senior Scholar Award of the Complex Systems Society in September 2016.

Christine James FLSW is a Welsh poet and academic. She served as the first female Archdruid of Wales from June 2013 until June 2016. She first presided over the ceremonies at the National Eisteddfod in the 2013 Eisteddfod in Denbigh. Like all holders, she qualified by winning a major literary prize at a previous National Eisteddfod. She was elected Cofiadur (Recorder) of the Gorsedd of Bards at the National Eisteddfod in 2017, again as the first woman to hold the post. She is a recipient of the Wales Book of the Year.

He took over as Vice-Chancellor of Swansea University at the end of the 2018/2019 academic year.
Anita Thapar is a Welsh child psychiatrist who is Professor of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry in the Institute of Psychological Medicine and Clinical Neuroscience at Cardiff University. Her research focuses on risk factors for ADHD and major depression in children. She was elected a fellow of the Royal College of Psychiatrists in 1995, and of the Academy of Medical Sciences and Learned Society of Wales in 2011. In 2017, she received the Frances Hoggan Medal from the Learned Society of Wales and was named a Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE), both in recognition of her research in child and adolescent psychiatry.
Sir Robert Hughes Williams,, commonly known as Robin Williams, is a Welsh physicist and academic, specialising in solid state physics and semiconductors. He was Vice-Chancellor of University of Wales, Swansea from 1994 to 2003. He had taught at the New University of Ulster and University of Wales, College of Cardiff, before joining Swansea.
M. Wynn Thomas OBE FEA FLSW FBA is a Professor of English at Swansea University and holds the Emyr Humphreys Chair of Welsh Writing in English at Swansea University. His expertise is in American poetry and modern Welsh literature.
