Tamil cinema is the segment of Indian cinema dedicated to the production of motion pictures in the Tamil language, the main spoken language in the state of Tamil Nadu. Such movies include Roja, Indian, Sivaji: The Boss, Enthiran. Tamil cinema has since produced some of the most commercially successful actors, directors and films of Indian cinema. It is the only film industry to have occupied the number 1 position on the global charts twice with Master and Leo, as well as being noted for the only Indian film industry to have box office collections as high as 650 crore despite minimal release windows and release reach.
Shanker Panicker is an Indian film and television actor, film director, producer, businessman and social worker who has worked in Malayalam and Tamil films. He has acted in nearly 200 films and was a leading actor in Malayalam cinema and a lead youth hero in Tamil cinema in the 1980s. Shankar's debut Tamil film, Oru Thalai Ragam, and Malayalam debut, Manjil Virinja Pookkal, completed theatrical runs of 365 and 250 days respectively. He was the most successful romantic hero in Malayalam movies along with Prem Nazir. He starred in nearly 100 films from 1980-1990 as a hero. Later, he became a director and producer, while continuing to act, from 1990 to 2024.
Tamil Nadu State Film Awards were given for excellence in Tamil cinema in India. They were given annually to honour the best talents and provide encouragement and incentive to the South Indian film industry by the Government of Tamil Nadu. The awards were decided by a committee headed by a Judge. The awards were first given in 1967 and discontinued after 1970. The awards were given again in 1977 and continued till 1982. The awards were not given in the years 1971 to 1976. However, in the year 1977, the awards for Best Actress and Best Actor were announced for the years 1971 to 1976 by way of honorary certificates by the government led by the then chief minister M.G.Ramachandran. Since 1988, the awards were regularly given until it became defunct in 2008.

The awards were first given in 1967 and discontinued after 1970. The awards were given again in 1977 and continued till 1982. The awards were not given in the years 1971 to 1976. This award was last given in the year 2015 to Jyothika for 36 Vayadhinile.
The Tamil Nadu State Film Award for Best Film Portraying Woman in Good Light is given by the state government as part of its annual Tamil Nadu State Film Awards for Tamil (Kollywood) films. The award was first given in 1994. This award category was suggested by Sengottuvelan, former judge of the Madras High Court and Chairman of the State Women's Commission. The Award was discontinued post 2008, but revived on 2015 with Suriya's 36 Vayathinile Win.

He has won two National Film Awards.
