Thamarai (born 10 November 1965) is an Indian poet and lyricist who writes in Tamil. She is a prominent figure in the Tamil literary world and has worked in Tamil cinema. [1]

She made her debut in the Tamil film industry through the 1998 film Iniyavale , which was directed by Seeman and had music composed by Deva.

Life and career

Thamarai was born in Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu on 10 November 1965. She graduated from Government College of Technology, Coimbatore, in production engineering and worked for six years in Coimbatore. With her passion for poetry, she decided to move to Chennai, where she worked as a freelance journalist in an organization named Bhagya and wrote essays, stories and poems. [2] Through her literary works, she became popular and got noticed. Director Seeman assigned her as lyricist for the song "Thendral Enthan" for his Tamil film Iniyavale . [3] Subsequently, she wrote lyrics for films such as Unnidathil Ennai Koduthen ("Malligai Poove") and Thenali ("Injirango Injirango"). Her work together with music director Harris Jayaraj in Minnale marked the turning point in her film industry career, primarily noted for her song "Vaseegara" in the movie.[ citation needed ]

After Minnale, the trio, composed of director Gautham Vasudev Menon and music director Harris Jayaraj, teamed up several times again ( Kaakha Kaakha , Vettaiyaadu Vilaiyaadu , Pachaikili Muthucharam and Vaaranam Aayiram ) and were a very successful collaboration in the film field, until the break-up between Menon and Jayaraj happened. Since then, she is teaming up with A. R. Rahman, who replaced Jayaraj. Menon, Jayaraj and Thamarai teamed up again in July 2014 for the Ajith Kumar film Yennai Arindhaal . The film's album was released on 1 January 2015, and it was well-received by critics. [4] [5] She wrote" Neeraambal Poovae" from the movie Nannbenda, where she again worked for Harris Jayaraj. The song is sung by Arjun Menon.[ citation needed ]

Personal life

Thamarai is married to Thozhar Thiyagu. They have a son. Thamarai is a vegan and an advocate of animal rights. [6]

Rahman is the most frequent winner with sixteen wins, which also includes nine consecutive wins between 1992 and 2000. Harris Jayaraj follows A. R. Rahman with five wins.

Vinnaithaandi Varuvaayaa is a 2010 Indian Tamil-language romantic drama film written and directed by Gautham Vasudev Menon, starring Silambarasan and Trisha. Jointly produced by Elred Kumar, Jayaraman, VTV Ganesh and P. Madan under the banner Escape Artists Motion Pictures and RS Infotainment, the film was distributed by Udhayanidhi Stalin's Red Giant Movies. The story was simultaneously shot in Telugu as Ye Maaya Chesave, starring Naga Chaitanya and Samantha, however, with a different cast.

"Nenjukkul Peidhidum" is a song from the 2008 movie Vaaranam Aayiram, composed by Harris Jayaraj, penned by Thamarai and sung by Hariharan, Krish, Devan and Prasanna with a chorus interlude. It was a chart topper of the year 2008. Harris’ music complements Thamarai’s lyrics in this song, the lyrics play a major part in the song showcasing the best of Thamarai that is finest, youthful, simple and romantic. Its picturisation too got noticed. The song has now achieved a cult status.

Krrish is an Indian actor who predominantly appears in Tamil and Malayalam cinema. He made his debut in the commercially successful Yennai Arindhaal directed by Gautham Vasudev Menon starring Ajith Kumar in 2015. Then went on to play one of the antagonists in the Tamil hit Achcham Yenbadhu Madamaiyada also directed by Gautham Vasudev Menon in 2016. He made his Malayalam debut with Kinavalli directed by Sugeeth in 2018 for which he won the Asiavision Awards for most promising actor. Kinavalli garnered positive reviews from critics and the audiences alike. His latest release is the comic caper web series "What's up Velakkari" which has released in Zee 5 in December 2018. He plays a funny Cop called Rakesh. The web series has been released in 7 languages in India. His latest Tamil film is ‘Hostel’ directed by Sumanth Radhakrishnan starring Ashok Selvan, Priya Bhavani Shankar and comedian Sathish.

Yennai Arindhaal is the soundtrack album for the 2015 Indian Tamil-language action thriller film of the same name, co-written and directed by Gautham Vasudev Menon, starring Ajith Kumar, Arun Vijay, Anushka Shetty, Trisha, Parvathy Nair and Vivek in the lead roles, while Anikha, Ashish Vidyarthi, Suman and Avinash playing the pivotal roles. The soundtrack album composed by Harris Jayaraj, consists of seven tracks, with six tracks written by Thamarai and one song was written by Vignesh Shivan. Harris Jayaraj, for the first time he is composing for an Ajith Kumar-starrer film. The audio rights of the soundtrack album were marketed and purchased by Sony Music. Prior to the soundtrack release, a single track, titled "Adhaaru Adhaaru" from the film was released on 11 December 2014, and the complete soundtrack album in its entirety was released on 1 January 2015, coinciding with the New Year's Day and met with a positive critical reception, from critics and music listeners praising Harris Jayaraj's musicianship, and the good composition for an Ajith-starrer film, and also its contribution for Gautham's reunion after Vaaranam Aayiram (2008).

<i>Vaaranam Aayiram</i> (soundtrack) 2008 soundtrack album by Harris Jayaraj

Vaaranam Aayiram is the soundtrack album for the 2008 film of the same name directed by Gautham Vasudev Menon, and features music by Harris Jayaraj, following four successive soundtracks with the director. The album was under production from one-and-a-half years and featured seven songs written by Thamarai and Na. Muthukumar. The album was distributed by Sony BMG and released on 24 September 2008. The soundtrack for the Telugu dubbed version titled Surya S/o Krishnan featured lyrics by Veturi and was released on 30 October 2008.

The following is a list of unproduced Gautham Vasudev Menon projects in roughly chronological order. During his career, Indian film director Gautham Vasudev Menon has worked on a number of projects which never progressed beyond the production stage under his direction. Some of these projects fell in development hell, were officially canceled, or would see life under a different production team.
