Iain Harvey is a British film producer based in London, England. He is mostly known for being the founder of the UK-based animation studio The Illuminated Film Company and for executive producing the BAFTA-awarded short The Snowman (1982), the animated TV show The Very Hungry Caterpillar (1993) and the animated short film T.R.A.N.S.I.T (1998). Career

in 1972, Harvey obtained a Bachelor's in Economics from the University of Sheffield. After graduating, he worked in publishing with companies such as Hamish Hamilton and the Penguin Group, whilst helping to fund the animation company Snowman Enterprises. [3] Harvey went on to produce and executive produce numerous TV series and animated films, including the feature film When the Wind Blows (1986) and the BBC animated series Spider! (1991).

In 1993, Harvey founded The Illuminated Film Company and produced the animated children's series The Very Hungry Caterpillar & Other Stories (1993), which was released in the United States by Disney. [4] Since then, the studio has produced numerous animated projects, including the animated feature Christmas Carol: The Movie (2001) (dir. by Jimmy T. Murakami) and the TV series Little Princess (2006-2020). Harvey's most recent work includes TV series The Rubbish World of Dave Spud (2019-2024) and Oscar-shortlisted animated short A Bear Named Wojtek (2023). [5]

Outside of producing, Harvey has worked as a writer for the online magazine Animation World Network (AWN), contributing with numerous articles on the animation industry between 1996 and 2003. [6] [7] Harvey is also on the board of the Mark Bruce Dance Company. [8]

Harvey's films have received numerous accolades, including the 1982 BAFTA Award for The Snowman (dir. by Dianne Jackson), the 2024 British Animation Award for Best Long Form Animation with A Bear Named Wojtek (2023). In December 2024, the film was also short-listed for the 97th Academy Awards in the Best Animated Short Film category. [5]

The short film War Game (2002), produced by Harvey and directed by Dave Unwin, received the Best Television Special Award at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival. [13]

The TV series Little Princess (2006-2020), produced by Harvey and directed by Edward Foster and Sue Tong, won the 1st prize for Best Animated Series at the 14th Stuttgart International Film Festival [14] and received 3 BAFTA nominations for Best Television Series. [15]

In 2024, the TV Series The Rubbish World of Dave Spud (2019-2024), directed by Edward Foster and produced by Harvey, received the Award for Best Children's Series at the 2024 British Animation Awards. [16]

The Batman is an American animated television series based on the DC Comics superhero Batman. Developed by Michael Goguen and Duane Capizzi, and produced by Warner Bros. Animation and DC Comics for seasons 3–5, the series first aired on Kids' WB on September 11, 2004, then Cartoon Network on April 2, 2005. The show would become exclusive to the former network for its third, fourth, and fifth seasons in early 2006. The Batman won six Daytime Emmy Awards over the course of its run. Dave Wasson is an American animator, storyboard artist, director, producer, writer, and voice actor. Wasson created the Cartoon Network original series Time Squad, before going on to develop Star vs. the Forces of Evil as director, writer, and executive producer. He also served as director and writer of the series, supervising director of Making Fiends, and executive producer and director of the series The Buzz on Maggie. He is also the author and illustrator of the children's book The Big Ideas of Buster Bickles. Wasson is currently developer and executive producer of The Cuphead Show! for Netflix.

Philip Roman is an American animator and the director of the Peanuts and Garfield animated specials. He is the founder of the animation studios Film Roman and Phil Roman Entertainment.

<i>The Rubbish World of Dave Spud</i> British television series

The Rubbish World of Dave Spud is a British children's animated series featuring the surreal adventures of the eponymous Dave Spud of Grimsby, his friends and tower block-dwelling family. It was created and directed by Edward Foster, inspired by his 2003 NFTS student short 'Anna Spud'. It was developed into a pilot in 2010 produced by The Illuminated Film Company. 26 11-minute instalments were commissioned, whilst the soundtrack was composed by electronic group Basement Jaxx. In May 2020, for series 2 a further 52 installments were commissioned. Series 3 aired its first 6 episodes on CITV in July 2023. Series 3 ended on 12 September 2024 as well as the whole show.

<i>A Bear Named Wojtek</i> 2023 film

A Bear Named Wojtek is a 2023 Scottish-Polish animated short film directed by Iain Gardner. The 28-minute animated film about the true story of Wojtek, the war bear, has been selected in various international film festivals, including the Annecy International Animation Film Festival and the Manchester Animation Film Festival. It also won a British Animation Award for Best Long Form Animation as well as a Venice TV Award for Best Animation. The film was first broadcast on BBC Alba on the 8th May 2024. It was shortlisted for the Best Animated Short Film category at the 97th Academy Awards.

Iain Alexander Gardner is a Scottish animator and director based in Edinburgh, Scotland. His notable works include the 2023 Scottish-Polish animated short film A Bear Named Wojtek (2023).
