Education

He was educated at Berkhamsted School; Christ's College, Cambridge (B.A. Geography 2002–05, M.Phil Polar Studies 2005–06) and the University of Edinburgh (Ph.D. Glaciology 2007–11), [1] his doctoral thesis "Hydrology and dynamics of a land-terminating Greenland outlet glacier" being published in 2012. [2]

Cricket

Bartholomew played one first-class match for Cambridge University Cricket Club: [3] in the University Match of 2006 he scored 18 and 42 opening the batting, being dismissed by Michael Munday in both innings. [4]

Catastrophe insurance

Bartholomew previously worked on catastrophe modelling at Risk Management Solutions (RMS), which developed a parametric insurance model for New York City after Hurricane Sandy. In 2017, Bartholomew co-founded FloodFlash, a London-based flood insurance provider which pays out on a parametric basis (if water levels exceed a pre-agreed threshold according to an installed sensor) rather than on an assessment of damages. A drumlin, from the Irish word droimnín, first recorded in 1833, in the classical sense is an elongated hill in the shape of an inverted spoon or half-buried egg formed by glacial ice acting on underlying unconsolidated till or ground moraine. Clusters of drumlins create a landscape which is often described as having a 'basket of eggs topography'.

Glacial surges are short-lived events where a glacier can advance substantially, moving at velocities up to 100 times faster than normal. Surging glaciers cluster around a few areas. High concentrations of surging glaciers occur in Svalbard, the Canadian Arctic islands, Alaska and Iceland. In some glaciers, surges can occur in fairly regular cycles, with 15 to 100 or more surge events per year. In other glaciers, surging remains unpredictable. In some glaciers, however, the period of stagnation and build-up between two surges typically lasts 10 to 200 years and is called the quiescent phase. During this period the velocities of the glacier are significantly lower, and the glaciers can retreat substantially.

Glacier morphology

Glacier morphology, or the form a glacier takes, is influenced by temperature, precipitation, topography, and other factors. The goal of glacial morphology is to gain a better understanding of glaciated landscapes, and the way they are shaped. Types of glaciers can range from massive ice sheets, such as the Greenland ice sheet, to small cirque glaciers found perched on mountain tops. Glaciers can be grouped into two main categories:

  1. Ice flow is constrained by the underlying bedrock topography
  2. Ice flow is unrestricted by surrounding topography
Sea level rise The current long-term trend for sea levels to rise mainly in response to global warming

Since at least the start of the 20th century, the average global sea level has been rising. Between 1900 and 2016, the sea level rose by 16–21 cm (6.3–8.3 in). More precise data gathered from satellite radar measurements reveal an accelerating rise of 7.5 cm (3.0 in) from 1993 to 2017, which is a trend of roughly 30 cm (12 in) per century. This acceleration is due mostly to human-caused global warming, which is driving thermal expansion of seawater and the melting of land-based ice sheets and glaciers. Between 1993 and 2018, thermal expansion of the oceans contributed 42% to sea level rise; the melting of temperate glaciers, 21%; Greenland, 15%; and Antarctica, 8%. Climate scientists expect the rate to further accelerate during the 21st century.
