Ibrahim Gashi (born 6 April 1963, in Llapushnik village of Drenas Kosovo) is a Kosovar Albanian academic. He is a professor at the University of Pristina, and was a rector there between 2012 and 2014.
Ibrahim Gashi studied at the University of Pristina, and began working there as an assistant after his masters thesis defense between 1994 and 1998. He worked as a lecturer between 1998 and 2004 in the Department of History. In 2003 he earned a doctorate in political history of the Balkans in a three-year study program at the Institute for East European Studies of the University of Graz. In 2004 he was elected assistant professor in the Department of Political Science, UP, where he works as an associate professor of the History of International Relations and Foreign Policy and Diplomacy.
Before entering politics, he performed some important academic functions for the university as Coordinator of the Center for Teaching Perfect (2004–2008), Head of the Department of Political Science (2004–2007) and board member of the University Pristina (2005–2006), and Spokesman (2005–2006). In October 2006 the founding assembly of AKR elected Gashi the Presidency of the AKR and in 2011 vice president. In the 2007 elections he was elected member of the Assembly of Kosovo where AKR represents the highest organ of the Assembly, then a member of the Presidency of the Assembly and a member of the Parliamentary Committee on Foreign Affairs.
On 14 November 2016 he joined the Democratic Party of Kosovo and was welcomed by its president, Kadri Veseli. [1]
In 2012, the university elected him as rector. In 2013, he published three papers in a predatory journal to meet the formal conditions for a tenured position. [2] [3] [4] He was exposed by Professor Qendrim Gashi who demanded his resignation or removal as Rector. [5] Later, the same was demanded by other professors [6] [7] and students. [8] On 8 February 2014 he resigned following two weeks of protests by students and civil society. [9]
Ibrahim Rugova was a Kosovo Albanian politician, scholar, and writer, who served as the President of the partially recognised Republic of Kosova, serving from 1992 to 2000 and as President of Kosovo from 2002 until his death in 2006. He oversaw a popular struggle for independence, advocating a peaceful resistance to Yugoslav rule and lobbying for U.S. and European support, especially during the Kosovo War.
The Democratic Party of Kosovo is one of the largest political parties in Kosovo. It was originally a social-democratic party coming out of the demilitarised Kosovo Liberation Army after the Kosovo War, with most of the leadership coming from Albanian nationalists and former members of the People's Movement of Kosovo. The University of Pristina is a public university located in Pristina, Kosovo. It is the institution that emerged after the disestablishment of the University of Pristina (1969–1999) as a result of the Kosovo War. The inauguration of the university was a historical occurrence not only for the people of Kosovo, but for the whole Albanian nation. On 15 February, the solemn Parliament session took place, which is also proclaimed as The University of Pristina's Day. In the composition of the newly established University of Pristina were faculties with their headquarters in Pristina: the Faculty of Philosophy, Faculty of Law and Economics, Faculty of Engineering and Faculty of Medicine. Now the University of Pristina has 17 faculties, of which 14 are academic faculties and 3 are faculties of applied sciences. Contained within the emblem is a translation of the name into Latin, Universitas Studiorum Prishtiniensis.

In early 2014, Kosovo media accused rector Ibrahim Gashi of the University of Pristina and his staff of falsifying research and publishing scientific papers based on that research to bolster their academic credentials. Student protesters were angered after the Assembly failed to pass a vote demanding Gashi's resignation, with a coalition of governmental political parties opposing the move. A spokeswoman for the Kosovo police said that violence began when students began throwing red paint and rocks at responding officers, who then attempted to subdue them with tear gas. Reports state that Thirty police officers were reportedly injured, one with a head injury and several with broken arms or legs. More than 30 students and opposing politicians were arrested.
