Icebreakers of Germany

The icebreakers of Germany include one large icebreaker, used for International polar research and dozens of smaller icebreakers that clear navigation channels of ice in Germany's territorial waters. [1]

The Freiburg–Colmar railway was an international railway that formerly connected Freiburg im Breisgau, in the German state of Baden-Württemberg, with Colmar, in the French department of Haut-Rhin. The line crossed the river Rhine on a bridge between Breisach and Neuf-Brisach. Since that bridge was destroyed in 1945, the line from Freiburg has terminated at Breisach, and this stretch of line is now commonly called the Freiburg–Breisach railway, or the Breisacherbahn. The section from Freiburg to Breisach was completed in 1871 and the remainder in 1878.

The Keiler is a river icebreaker commissioned in December 2011 to serve as the flagship of Lauenburg's Water and Shipping Authority fleet of ten icebreakers, on the Elbe River. The vessel is 33.21 metres (109.0 ft) long and 8.45 metres (27.7 ft) wide. She has a crew of four, and has sleeping and dining accommodation for operations that take longer than a single shift.

A Wasserstraßen- und Schifffahrtsamt is a federal German agency, responsible for the administration of federal navigable waters and for the regulation of vessel traffic.

<i>Frankfurt</i> (icebreaker)

Frankfurt is a prototype river icebreaker constructed by Hitzler Werft for icebreaking duties on the Elbe River, Oder River, and canals in Germany, operated by the Wasser und Schifffahrtsamt Eberswalde. She was built in 2002. Three further vessels, built to a similar design, were ordered by the Wasser und Schifffahrtsamt in 2009.

Stephan Jantzen is a former German icebreaker built by Admiralty Shipyard in Leningrad, Soviet Union, in 1967. After decommissioning in 2005, the ship went through a number of owners before ending up as a museum ship in its former homeport, Rostock.
