Makumbe was a teacher before his ordination in 2000. Before his election he was the incumbent at St Andrew, Gweru. He is married to Florah and they have two children.

Wilson Timothy Sitshebo was the Anglican Bishop of Matabeleland until his death of a stroke in 2008. Born in 1952 and educated at St Bede’s College, Umtata, he was ordained deacon in 1979 and priest in 1980. After positions in Zimbabwe posts he was a tutor at the United College of the Ascension Selly Oak before his ordination to the episcopate in 2001. He was awarded a PhD in 2000 in the Faculty of Arts of the University of Birmingham for a dissertation titled "Towards a theological synthesis of Christian and Shona views of death and the dead: implications for pastoral care in the Anglican diocese of Harare, Zimbabwe."
The Anglican Diocese of Harare is a diocese of the Church of the Province of Central Africa. The Anglican Diocese of Mashonaland was formed in 1891 and its first bishop was George Knight-Bruce. He was succeeded by William Gaul (1895–1907), formerly Rector of St Cyprian's Church in Kimberley, Northern Cape. Small in stature, Gaul styled himself “the smallest bishop with the largest Diocese in Christendom.” In 1915 the diocese became the Diocese of Southern Rhodesia until 1952 when it reverted to the Diocese of Mashonaland. The diocese was known as the Diocese of Harare and Mashonaland, until changing his name to Diocese of Harare. It has experienced great turbulence in recent times.

John Mudiwa Washe Makumbe, often published as John Mw Makumbe, was a Zimbabwean political scientist, political philosopher and activist. He was a professor at the University of Zimbabwe for more than 25 years, and a frequent guest lecturer at Michigan State University. He was a pro-democracy opinion columnist and member of civil society organisations critical of Robert Mugabe and the ZANU–PF, as well as an activist for the welfare of albino people in Zimbabwe. Shortly before his death he became a prominent member of the Movement for Democratic Change, and he was expected to enter politics by contesting the Buhera West parliamentary constituency.
