Igor Alexandrovich Kononov is a Russian ice speedway world champion. [1] [2] [3] [4]

Career

On three occasions Kononov has finished runner-up in the Individual Ice Speedway World Championship title in 2011, 2017 and 2021. [5] During the 2021 Championship he was in the lead on the last lap of the race-off with Dinar Valeev but hit a rut approaching the last two bends which allowed Valeev to overtake and claim the title for himself. [6] [7]

He is a two times team world champion after winning the Team Ice Racing World Championship title with Russia in 2017 and 2020. [8] [9]

The 2018 FIM Ice Speedway World Championship was the 53rd edition of FIM Individual Ice Racing World Championship season. The world champion was determined by ten races hosted in five cities Astana, Tolyatti, Berlin, Inzell and Heerenveen between 3 February and 8 April 2018. The Championships were sponsored by Lukoil.

The FIM Ice Speedway of Nations, formerly known as the Ice Speedway Team World Championship, is an international ice speedway competition, first held in Kalinin (Tver), USSR, in 1979. Since its establishment, the tournament has been noted by a continued Russian dominance: the Soviet Union, Commonwealth of Independent States and Russia have won all but three tournaments. The only non-Russian teams to have won were West Germany in 1983, and Sweden - in 1985, 1995 and 2002.

The 2019 Ice Speedway of Nations was the 41st edition of the FIM's Ice Speedway World Championship for national teams and the first in its re-branding as the Ice Speedway of Nations. The event was held at the Anatoly Stepanov Stadium in Togliatti, Russia.

The 2020 FIM Ice Speedway World Championship was the 55th edition of the FIM Individual Ice Racing World Championship season. The world champion was determined by ten races hosted in five cities Almata, Tolyatti, Shadrinsk, Inzell and Heerenveen between 1 February and 8 April 2020. However the fourth and fifth rounds were cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the standings after three rounds were declared the official results.

The 2021 FIM Ice Speedway World Championship was the 56th edition of the FIM Individual Ice Racing World Championship season. Due to the continuing issues regarding the COVID-19 pandemic it was decided to hold a two-day final at the Anatoly Stepanov Stadium in Tolyatti, Russia, on 13 and 14 February 2021.
