Mega-Lada Togliatti is a Russian motorcycle speedway team based in Tolyatti and who race in the Russian Speedway Championship. [1]
The Anatoly Stepanov Stadium, formerly the Stroitel Stadium is located at Ulitsa Rodiny, 40 in Tolyatti. Its capacity is 15,000 seats and has a track circumference of 353 metres. [2]
The club began league speedway in 1967, as part of the Soviet Union Championship and raced as Zhiguli Togliatti from 1967 to 1992. The team's best league season was in 1986 after they finished runner-up behind Signal Rivne. [3] The name Zhiguli was a brand of car manufactured by AvtoVAZ at the time. [4]
Following the dissolution of the Soviet Union the team raced in the Russian Team Speedway Championship. [5] In 1995, a name change came as a result of the AvtoVAz company making the Lada brand of car. They were known as Mega-Lada Togliatti and would become the most successful club in Russia, winning a record 17 championships from 1994 to 2023. [6]
Additionally, the team competed in the defunct European Speedway Club Champions' Cup and won the event four times in 2002, 2003, 2005 and 2008.
AvtoVAZ is a Russian automobile manufacturing company owned by the state. It was formerly named as VAZ, an acronym for Volga Automotive Plant in Russian. The VAZ-2101"Zhiguli", commonly nicknamed "Kopeyka", is a compact sedan car produced by the Soviet manufacturer AvtoVAZ and introduced in 1970, the company's first product.
The VAZ-2103 Zhiguli is a deluxe compact sedan car, produced by VAZ, introduced in 1972 and produced until 1984. Better known by its export name Lada 1500 outside of its native Soviet Union and popularly nicknamed the Troika in its domestic market. The car was developed jointly by VAZ and FIAT at the same time as Fiat 124 Special, and the two models had the same basis and influenced each other. 2103 was built under license and tailored for the Soviet and Eastern European market. The 2103 externally differs from its predecessor, the VAZ-2101 firstly by its four, that is, double sets of headlights, different grille and direction pointers, moldings on the sides of the body and larger taillights. Its main difference - the more powerful 75 hp (55 kW) 1,452 cc (88.6 cu in) straight-four petrol engine. In addition, this model is distinguished by the presence of vacuum brake booster as well as self-adjusting rear brakes and internally on the new, Fiat 125 based front panel. The interior was also more upmarket with a different steering wheel, cloth interior trim on export versions and improved dashboard featuring wood imitation, tachometer, oil pressure gauge and front panel clock.
The 2005 European Speedway Club Champions' Cup was the eighth motorcycle speedway championship for clubs competing in Europe. It was organised by the European Motorcycle Union (UEM). The competition was primarily for Eastern European teams and only featured Polish teams from three of the 'Big four' leagues, with the British, Swedish and Danish leagues choosing not to compete.
