Igor Munteanu (born 10 August 1965) is a Moldovan politician and diplomat.[1] Between 2010 and 2015,he served as Ambassador of the Republic of Moldova to the United States of America and Mexico from 2010 to 2015 and Ambassador to Canada from 2011 to 2013.[2] From 2016 he is teaching Public Policy and Political Administrative MA Courses at the Academy of Economic Studies (ASEM) in Chisinau.
Igor Munteanu was born on August 10,1965,in Costuleni,Ungheni. He holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Communications and Journalism (1989,Moldova State University),a master's degree in political analysis and administration (1992,Romania's National School of Political and Administrative Studies) and a Doctoral degree in Public Law (2002,Free International University of Moldova). He has expertise in the field of Public Policy,Public sector reform,Regional Development,Political Parties,having as educational background political sciences and law.
Since 1993,Igor Munteanu has established together with a group of young intellectuals of Moldova one of the first think tanks,known as "Viitorul Foundation". The foundation has emerged into a specialized public research institute,IDIS Viitorul. Since 1996,Igor Munteanu has acted as Executive Director of IDIS Viitorul.[3]
He has relevant experience in public policy,electoral laws,regional development. He wrote several books,participating as author in many other collective publications. He served as Senior Expert in the Institutional Committee of the Council of Europe on local governmental affairs (2002-2008).[citation needed] He worked also with Freedom House,UN agencies (UNOPS,UNDP,UNICEF) and OECD. He cooperated with Bertelsmann Foundation (BTI) and World Integrity Survey (WIS). With OSI/LGI,Igor Munteanu co-chaired editorial work on anthologies of systems of public administration in ex-Soviet space,Old Rules under New Environment. He wrote articles on Eastern Partnership Policy of the EU and continues to be interested in researching foreign policy,regional security studies,NATO-Russia. He lectured at ASEM (2004-2008) and ULIM in 2014 in delivering courses in Political-Administrative Institutions and Public Policy.[citation needed]
Prior to his diplomatic assignment,Munteanu served as Independent Expert to the Congress of Local and Regional Authorities of the Council of Europe (2001-2008),monitoring the status of local and regional autonomy in several countries of the Council of Europe. Igor Munteanu wrote several publications for the national and international audience on governmental affairs,decentralization,foreign policy,post-Soviet transformation. Igor Munteanu has written and edited several publications,being actively engaged as free lance author with Radio Free Europe (1997–2005). He served as independent expert of the Congress of Local and Regional Authorities of the Council of Europe between 2003-2008. Munteanu is a strong proponent of European integration and advocates Moldova becoming a member of the European Union.[4] Munteanu designed and launched the publishing of the Arena Politicii Journal,as the first political sciences and foreign affairs journal in Moldova (1996-2000). In 2007,Munteanu served as a member of the International Board for the BSTF (Black Sea Trust Fund) and also a Member of the External evaluation committee of the Balkan Trust for Democracy (BTD).[citation needed]
The unification of Moldova and Romania or simply called as the Romanian reunification is a popular concept and hypothetical unification in the two countries that began during the Revolutions of 1989. The Romanian Revolution in 1989 and the independence of Moldova in 1991 further contributed to the development of a movement for the unification of the two Romanian-speaking countries. The question of reunification is recurrent in the public sphere of the two countries, often as a speculation, both as a goal and a danger. Though historically Romanian support for unification was high, a March 2022 survey following the Russian invasion of Ukraine indicated that only 11% of Romania's population supports an immediate union, while over 42% think it is not the right moment.

Igor Dodon is a Moldovan politician who previously served as the President of Moldova from 23 December 2016 to 24 December 2020. He served as Minister of Economy and Trade in the governments of Vasile Tarlev and Zinaida Greceanîi from September 2006 to September 2009 and was a member of the Parliament of Moldova from 2009 to 2016. He lost his bid for re-election in 2020 to Maia Sandu, whom he had defeated four years earlier in the 2016 Moldovan presidential election.
Vladimir Plahotniuc, commonly referred to as Vlad Plahotniuc, is a Moldovan politician, businessman and oligarch. He was the chairman of the Democratic Party of Moldova and previously was a member of the Parliament of Moldova for three terms, and served as First Vice President of the Parliament of Moldova. Until leaving the territory of the Republic of Moldova in 2019, he was considered to be the powerhouse of Moldovan politics in matters of influence, controlling Moldova's government and parliamentary majority. Since fleeing Moldova in June 2019, Plahotniuc has resided in Turkey.
John Onoje was a Sierra Leonean-born activist from Chișinău, the Republic of Moldova. He was a notable activist and member of the National Liberal Party (PNL). Onoje was a self-declared member of the Hyde Park public activism group presided by Oleg Brega. In 2011, he signed up to run for President in the Moldovan presidential election. Onoje's activity has been so well publicised that a party leader, Victor Șelin, proposed the withdrawal of his Moldovan citizenship on this basis.
Călin Georgescu is a Romanian senior expert in sustainable development, with an acknowledged recognition in the field, following 17 years of service in the environmental area in the United Nations system. Georgescu was appointed the executive director of the United Nations Global Sustainable Index Institute in Geneva and Vaduz for the period 2015–2016. Prior to that, he served as President of the European Research Centre for the Club of Rome (2013–2015). He is also member of the Club of Rome International in Switzerland.

Ion Ceban is a Moldovan politician, and the current mayor of Chișinău, Moldova's capital. He is also the leader of the pro-European National Alternative Movement party. Ceban was Vice President of the Moldovan parliament in 2019 and has served as a member of parliament in three legislatures. He also served as a leader of his party's faction in the Chișinău Municipal Council from 2015 to 2019. He has held different positions at the governmental level, starting from the head of a department to Deputy Minister.
Presidential elections are scheduled to be held in Moldova on 20 October 2024.
The next parliamentary elections in Moldova are to be held no later than 11 July 2025.
On 18 September 2022, protests in Moldova began in the capital city of Chișinău, demanding the resignation of the country's pro-Western government, amid an energy crisis causing rising natural gas prices and inflation, caused in part by the war in Ukraine.
