The team is owned by Ted Leonsis through Monumental Sports & Entertainment, and initially played its home games at the Capital Centre in Landover, Maryland, before moving to the Capital One Arena in Washington, D.C., in 1997.

As a defenseman, Stevens played 22 seasons in the National Hockey League (NHL) for the Washington Capitals, St. Louis Blues and New Jersey Devils, serving as captain of the Devils from 1992 to 2004. Although offensively capable, his defensive play and his heavy body checking on opponents were crucial to his success.
Alexander Mikhailovich Ovechkin is a Russian professional ice hockey left winger and captain of the Washington Capitals of the National Hockey League (NHL). Nicknamed "The Great 8" in reference to his jersey number and "Ovi" as a shortform of his last name, Ovechkin is widely regarded as one of the greatest ice hockey players of all time. Second only to Wayne Gretzky in all-time goal scoring, Ovechkin holds many NHL career records, including the most power play goals, most goals in away games, most overtime goals, most goalies scored upon, and most goals with one team in NHL history. Ovechkin is one of just three players in NHL history to score 800 career goals, along with Gretzky and Gordie Howe.

Owen Fussey is a Canadian-British former professional ice hockey forward. He was selected 90th overall in the 2001 NHL Entry Draft by the Washington Capitals and played four games in the National Hockey League with them during the 2003–04 season. The rest of his career, which lasted from 2003 to 2015 was spent in the minor leagues and then in Europe. Internationally Fussey played for the British national team at the 2012 World Championship Division I tournament.
Bruce Allan Boudreau is a Canadian professional ice hockey coach and former player. He previously served as head coach of the Washington Capitals, Anaheim Ducks, Minnesota Wild, and Vancouver Canucks of the National Hockey League (NHL). As a player, Boudreau played professionally for 20 seasons, and was a third round pick of the Toronto Maple Leafs at the 1975 NHL Amateur Draft. He played 141 games in the NHL with the Maple Leafs and Chicago Black Hawks, and 30 games in the World Hockey Association (WHA) with the Minnesota Fighting Saints. Boudreau played most of his career in the American Hockey League (AHL) for various teams where he was known for his goals and point-scoring abilities, recording 316 goals and 483 assists for 799 points in 634 games.

He played three years with HC Sochi before signing as a free agent to a one-year contract with Dynamo Moscow on July 7, 2017.
Carl Oliver Hagelin is a Swedish former professional ice hockey player who played eleven seasons in the National Hockey League (NHL) for the New York Rangers, Anaheim Ducks, Pittsburgh Penguins, Los Angeles Kings, and Washington Capitals. Hagelin was drafted by the Rangers in the sixth round, 168th overall, of the 2007 NHL Entry Draft, and won the Stanley Cup as a member of the Penguins in 2016 and 2017. Hagelin played the most playoff games of any NHL player in the 2010s decade, with 128. Prior to his professional career, Hagelin played four serasons NCAA Division I collegiate men's ice hockey with the University of Michigan Wolverines, serving as an alternate captain during his third year and a co-captain during his fourth year. Internationally, Hagelin won a silver medal with Sweden at the 2014 Winter Olympics.
Paul Zanette is a Canadian-Italian professional ice hockey player. He is currently an unrestricted free agent who most recently played for the Indy Fuel of the ECHL. In 2011, while playing for the Niagara University Purple Eagles, Zanette was named the Atlantic Hockey Player of the Year, and was a selected as a finalist for the Hobey Baker Award.
