Indego Africa (standing for "independence, development and governance") is a nonprofit social enterprise, founded in 2007, which works to establish for-profit women's cooperatives in Rwanda, and partners with them to produce and sell handcrafted products. [1] It uses the profits, along with grants and donations, to fund education programs in business management, entrepreneurship, literacy, and technology. [2] [3] [4] [5]

On October 1, 2014, Indego Africa launched a Leadership Academy in Kigali, Rwanda to provide advanced business education programs. [10] [11] [6]

Indego Africa runs programs supported by UN Women and funded by the government of Sweden to teach female refugees entrepreneurial and banking skills. [12]

Social impact

Indego Africa's reports to date show steady improvements in its partners' income, educational outcomes, entrepreneurial activities, and quality of life. [13] As of 2013, 69% of its artisan partners made over $1.50 a day vs. 3% in 2010; 89% reported that Indego Africa trainings helped them run their cooperatives or other businesses; 54% participated in a business outside their cooperative; 77% could afford to send all of their children to school; and 90% could afford healthcare. [14]

Maraba coffee is grown in the Maraba area of southern Rwanda. Maraba's coffee plants are the Bourbon variety of the Coffea arabica species and are grown on fertile volcanic soils on high-altitude hills. The fruit is handpicked, mostly during the rainy season between March and May, and brought to a washing station in Maraba, where the coffee beans are extracted and dried. At several stages, the beans are sorted according to quality. The farmers receive credits based on the amount and quality of the beans they provide.

Sonia Mugabo is a Rwandan businesswoman, fashion designer and fashionista. She is the founder and chief executive officer of the fashion label Sonia Mugabo, which is named after her.

Josephine "Fina" Uwineza is a Rwandan entrepreneur and social activist. In 2018, she plans to open the first microbrewery within Rwanda which will feature a staff composed entirely of local women.

Roberta Annan is a Ghanaian businesswoman and the founder of the African Fashion Foundation. She is also an investor, philanthropist, and a United Nations Environment Programme Goodwill Ambassador. Annan was the youngest African to be inducted into the African Leadership Hall of Fame. A graduate of Carleton University and Georgetown University, Annan began her career with an internship at the U.N. headquarters in New York City. Annan is the owner of Annan Capital Partners, an investment company in Sub-Saharan Africa, and ALDG, a portfolio of assets in sustainable hospitality, agribusiness, and sustainable luxury in Africa.
