India For Sports was a crowd funding platform for Indian athletes. It was incepted in June, 2014 to help Indian athletes with funding. It is running 6 fund raising campaigns [1] for athletes in individual sports disciplines such as athletics, table tennis and wrestling.

Organisation

India For Sports (IFS) was set up with a vision to provide a same level playing field to the Indian athletes when they compete at international events. [2] The organization tries to solve the basic issue of funding for the deserving athletes. It also provides the athletes visibility by covering their stories, hardships, achievements and activities. The organization also connects the athletes to corporate sponsors and other sports aiding organization to provide facilities such as dietitians, nutritionists, psychologists etc.

Achievements

The organization has successfully raised funds in excess of 2L INR since its inception from more than 125 contributors. [3] The funds have been raised for Arpinder Singh, Amit Kumar, Sharath Kamal, Inderjeet Singh [4] and Khushbir Kaur. [5] The organization has been able to successfully bring out stories of its athletes out in the public through its social media disseminations. It also has organized psychological sessions for two of its athletes. Inderjeet Singh benefitted a lot from such mental stability session which resulted in him winning bronze medal in Asian Games, 2014. [6] The organization also bring out stories of other athletes in order to provide them the much deserving visibility in the public eye. [7] [8]

India hosted the 2010 Commonwealth Games which were held in Delhi from 3 to 14 October 2010. In India, the sport of athletics was introduced during the period of the British Raj. The sport is governed at national level by the Athletics Federation of India, which was formed in 1946. Despite its large population, few Indian athletes have won a medal in a global or major championship. This began to change in the 21st century, when Indians started taking greater interest in athletics more generally and improved facilities for the sport began to be built at a local level. At a continental level, it has been among the more successful Asian nations, though some distance behind China and Japan.

Amit Kumar Dahiya is an Indian wrestler who represented India at the 2012 Summer Olympics in London, United Kingdom. He was the youngest wrestler ever to represent India at the Olympics while also being the youngest athlete of the 2012 Indian Olympic delegation.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Khushbir Kaur</span> Indian racewalker

Khushbir Kaur is an Indian athlete, a 20-kilometre racewalker. She first came into limelight after winning bronze in the 10,000-metre (6.2 mi) walk race at the 2012 Asian Junior Athletics Championships held at Colombo, Sri Lanka. She participated in the 2013 World Championships in the 20 km walk category. She clocked 1:34:28 and finished 39th. At the 2014 Asian walking championships in Japan, she came second with a timing of 1:33:07 and bettered her own national record of 1:33:37. In the same year, she became the first Indian woman to win a silver at the Asian Games. She received the Arjuna Award in 2017 after her consecutive victories in International sports events.
