Indiranagar Sangeetha Sabha (or ISS) was established in 1986 at Indiranagar, Bangalore in the state of Karnataka in India as a school for Indian classical music and dance. [1] In 2004, the Indiranagar Sangeetha Sabha's cultural complex, Purandara Bhavana, was inaugurated by former President of India A. P. J. Abdul Kalam. [2]

Activities

Indiranagar Sangeetha Sabha focusses on Indian classical music and Indian classical dance. The organisation has drafted their own syllabus. Workshops are conducted with respect to voice culture and singing. [3] [4]

Achievements

International Music & Dance Conference

To bring out the research work of musicians whose works are unrecognised, the Indiranagar Sangeetha Sabha conducts National and International Conferences every three years. 'Africa Meets Asia', an international conference conducted in 2008 brought artistes from different parts of the world on a single platform. [5] [6] [7] In 2011 ISS organised a conference with the theme "Rhythm and Melodies in World Music", national and international scholars took part in the demonstrations. [8] [9] In 2014, the third international music and dance festival was organised with the theme "Classical Forms in World Music". [10]

Indiranagar Sangeetha Sabha organises an annual Music and Dance festival every year. [11]

Purandara award

On the occasion of the annual Music and Dance festival, Indiranagar Sangeetha Sabha confers a Purandara award to those in Indian classical music and dance who have contributed to the field. Winners are:

Srinivasa Nayaka, also known as Purandara Dasa was a composer, singer and a Haridasa philosopher from present-day Karnataka, India. He was a follower of Madhvacharya's Dvaita philosophy. He was one of the chief founding proponents of Carnatic music. In honor of his contributions to Carnatic music, he is referred to as the Pitamaha of Carnatic music. According to a legend, he is considered as an incarnation of Narada.

It played a vital role in the revival of the Indian classical dance form of Bharatnatyam in the 1930s when it faced near extinction due to a negative connotation caused by conservative societal standards.

"Bombay" Jayashri Ramnath is an Indian Carnatic vocalist, singer, and musician. She has sung songs in multiple languages, including for Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam and Hindi movies. Born into a family of musicians, Jayashri represents the fourth generation of music practitioner's in her family. Trained by Lalgudi Jayaraman and T.R. Balamani. She was awarded India's fourth highest civilian award, the Padma Shri, in 2021. In December 2023, she was awarded the most prestigious award in the Carnatic Music Field, the Sangeetha Kalanidhi, by the Madras Music Academy. She was nominated for Academy Award for Best Original Song (Oscar) for Pi's Lullaby from Life of Pi movie. She has become one of the most sought-after Carnatic musicians today.

Anil Srinivasan is an Indian pianist and an education entrepreneur. Born in Chennai, India and educated at the University of Southern California and at Columbia University, New York, he is well known for his collaborative work with Carnatic vocalist Sikkil Gurucharan and for his pioneering work in music education in South India. Anil Srinivasan was awarded Kalaimamani by the government of Tamil Nadu for the year 2019.

Lalgudi Gopala Jayaraman Radhakrishnan, popularly known as G. J. R. Krishnan or Lalgudi Krishnan, is a Carnatic violinist, vocalist and composer. He is the son and disciple of the legendary maestro Lalgudi G. Jayaraman. Over the years, Krishnan has nurtured and propagated the legacy of the Lalgudi Bani, while also blending his own artistic elements. His style is defined by technique, bhava, laya, and a philosophical adherence to the notion that the violin must closely mimic the human voice. Lalgudi Krishnan was awarded with the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 2015. This is the highest Indian recognition given to people in the field of performing arts. Along with his sister, Lalgudi Vijayalakshmi, the duo was honored with the prestigious Sangita Kalanidhi award from the Madras Music Academy in 2022. This is considered the highest accolade in the field of Carnatic music.

Nagai Muralidharan is a Carnatic violinist from India. He was awarded Kalaimamani by the State Government of Tamil Nadu in 2003.

The Rudrapatnam Brothers are an Indian Carnatic vocal duo, consisting of brothers R. N. Thyagarajan and Dr. R. N. Tharanathan. The brothers come from a family of musicians from Rudrapatna village off the Kaveri banks in Arkalgud Thaluk of Hassan district in the southwest Indian state of Karnataka. Vocalist Tiger Varadachariar, on seeing the musical atmosphere there, once claimed that "Rudrapatnam is the Thanjavur of Karnataka". Music, Veda adhyayana, and studying Sanskrit were integral parts of their family tradition.

Ombathuveli Subrahmanyam Thyagarajan was an Indian carnatic musician based in Chennai.

The Cleveland Thyagaraja Festival is a 12-day festival of South Indian classical music and dance in Cleveland, Ohio, and is held each year around Easter weekend. The festival is a celebration in honor of Tyagaraja, the famous composer of Carnatic music, who composed thousands of devotional compositions, most in Telugu and Sanskrit language. The festival began in 1978, and has since grown to become the largest South Indian classical music and dance festival outside of India. The festival draws its audience from all over the United States, as well as from Canada and other parts of the world.

Lalgudi Rajalakshmi is a violinist in the Indian classical Carnatic style of music. She performs the violin in the Lalgudi tradition.
