Inktank Storage was the lead development contributor and financial sponsor company behind the open source Ceph distributed file system. [2] Inktank was founded by Sage Weil and Bryan Bogensberger and initially funded by DreamHost, [3] Citrix [4] and Mark Shuttleworth. [5]

Inktank was created to offer professional services and support for the open source Ceph storage system. CTO and founder Sage Weil started the open source Ceph project in 2004 for his doctoral dissertation at the University of California, Santa Cruz. [7] In August 2012, Inktank joined the Linux Foundation to further open source technologies such as Ceph. [8] In September 2012, Mark Shuttleworth invested 1 million dollars to help support the progression of Ceph.

Upstart is a discontinued event-based replacement for the traditional init daemon—the method by which several Unix-like computer operating systems perform tasks when the computer is started. It was written by Scott James Remnant, a former employee of Canonical Ltd. In 2014, Upstart was placed in maintenance mode, and other init daemons, such as systemd, were recommended in place of Upstart.
