Institute for Adult Learning Singapore (IAL) is the Training and Adult Education autonomous institute within the Singapore University of Social Sciences (SUSS). [1] It was established in 2008. IAL offers a range of education programmes such as Master's degree, WSQ Diploma, WSQ Advanced Certificate, and short courses in the field of training and adult education. [1] [2] IAL functions as the National Centre of Excellence for Adult Learning that aims to enhance the standards of Training and Adult Education (TAE) in Singapore by promoting ongoing education and partnering with higher education institutions and training providers. [3] [4] [5] IAL engages in research to guide continuous education policies and practices, and aids in applying this research to develop practical tools and resources for the TAE community. [5] Additionally, IAL contributes to the National Centre of Excellence for Workplace Learning (NACE) network, particularly through NACE@IAL, focusing on improving workplace learning theories and practices, as well as fostering innovation and technology within the TAE sector. History

IAL was established in 2008 to provide training for adult educators and undertake research in adult learning.

From 1 April 2019, IAL was restructured into an autonomous institute within Singapore University of Social Sciences (SUSS). [8]

On 11 January 2023, IAL has signed MoUs with Microsoft and SNEC to guide digital learning material design and enhance continuing education and training and ophthalmic healthcare skills. [9] From 13 March 2023, Associate Professor (Practice) Yeo Li Pheow succeeded Professor Lee Wing On as IAL Executive Director. [10] On 20 October 2023, IAL has partnered with Agency for Integrated Care, Home Team Academy, and Kydon Holdings, enhancing the learning ecosystem through professional development, digital transformation, and creating effective learning materials across sectors. [11]

Programmes

The Institute for Adult Learning (IAL) offers a variety of educational programs, including the WSQ Advanced Certificate in Learning and Performance (ACLP), the WSQ Workplace Learning Facilitator (WLF), the WSQ Diploma in Design and Development of Learning for Performance (DDDLP), the Master in Boundary-Crossing Learning and Leadership (MBX), and the Master of Learning and Professional Development (MLPD). Adult Education Professionalisation (AEP)

In 2014, the Adult Education Professionalisation (AEP) was launched by IAL. There are three levels of AEP namely Associate Adult Educators (AAE), Specialist Adult Educators (SAE) with either Curriculum Development or Facilitation track or Adult Education Fellows (AEF). [17]

James Cook University Singapore is a branch campus of James Cook University, a public research university based in Australia. Established in 2003, it is currently the only overseas institution with university status in Singapore. While the university offers a comprehensive range of courses, it specialises in ecology, marine and environmental sciences. The Workforce Skills Qualifications (WSQ) system is a national continuing education and training system designed for adult workers in Singapore, complementing the formal education system for students. WSQ training is accessible to all workers and does not require academic pre-requisites. The WSQ provides training for skills upgrading and also recognition and certification of workers' existing skills. There are seven qualification levels from basic Certificate to graduate Diploma and these spell out the upgrading and career advancement pathways for workers. Workers can also be certified with Statements of Attainment for individual modules to fill gaps in their skills.

SIM University (UniSIM) was a private university in Singapore that opened in 2005 before shutting down in 2017. The university was established and managed under the Singapore Institute of Management (SIM) Group. It was the only private university in Singapore after Nanyang University. The university practiced an open-door academic policy towards working adults and offered only part-time programmes. Between 2010 and 2017, UniSIM was registered under the Committee for Private Education (CPE).

The Singapore University of Social Sciences School of Law is an autonomous law school of Singapore University of Social Sciences. It was established in 2017, as Singapore's third law school after the NUS Faculty of Law and the SMU School of Law. The school was established to address the shortage of practitioners in family and criminal law. In 2018, it was reported that of the 60 pioneer SUSS law students, seven have either dropped out or deferred their studies setting the attrition rate at 10%.

Naval Base Secondary School (NBSS) is a co-educational government secondary school in Yishun, Singapore. Founded in 1957, NBSS initially began as a school for children of employees of the British Navy. Since 2003, NBSS has been organizing overseas trips for their students to decrease delinquency along with getting students more interested in the arts.

The Singapore Association for the Deaf (SADeaf) is a charitable organisation for the deaf and hard-of-hearing in Singapore founded in 1955. SADeaf is a member of the National Council of Social Service and the World Federation of the Deaf. SADeaf is also supported by the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Social and Family Development.
