The Institute of Certified Public Accountants of Uganda (ICPA Uganda) is a professional body for certified public accountants (CPAs) in Uganda. As of July 2016, total membership was about 2,000 members. [1] [2]

Location

ICPA Uganda maintains its headquarters at 42 Bukoto Street, on Kololo Hill in Kampala, the capital and largest city of Uganda. [2] [3] The coordinates of the institute's headquarters are 0°20'27.0"N, 32°35'20.0"E (Latitude:0.340833; Longitude:32.588889). [4]

History

Institute of Certified Public Accountants of Uganda, ICPAU, was established in 1992 by an act of parliament. The first five-member governing council was appointed by the minister of finance in 1993. The first duly elected seven-person council was installed on 8 November 1994 for a three-year renewable term. [5]

Overview

ICPAU is a national professional accountancy organization established to regulate and maintain the standard of accountancy in Uganda. It is also mandated to regulate the conduct of all professional accountants in the country. The members of this organization are employed in public service, private enterprise, government, education, industry, and commerce. [2] In collaboration with the Uganda National Examinations Board (UNEB), the institute organises and administers the professional competency examinations that lead to the recognition of an accountant as a CPA in Uganda. Governing council

The eleven-person governing council is chaired by ICPA Uganda's president, CPA Constant Othieno Mayende, deputized by CPA Josephine Okui Okwakol Ossiya, the second woman to serve in that capacity since the institute was founded in 1992. [9]

The secretariat

The secretariat is headed by the chief executive officer, Derick Nkajja, who also serves as the secretary to the governing council. The Current Director of Education is Mr John Bosco Ntangaare, Director of Corporate Services is CPA Simon Oola, The Director of Standards & Regulations is CPA Mark Omona

International affiliations

ICPAU has been a member of the International Federation of Accountants (IFAC) since 1997. [2]

Certified Public Accountant (CPA) is the title of qualified accountants in numerous countries in the English-speaking world. It is generally equivalent to the title of chartered accountant in other English-speaking countries. In the United States, the CPA is a license to provide accounting services to the public. It is awarded by each of the 50 states for practice in that state. Additionally, all states except Hawaii have passed mobility laws to allow CPAs from other states to practice in their state. State licensing requirements vary, but the minimum standard requirements include passing the Uniform Certified Public Accountant Examination, 150 semester units of college education, and one year of accounting-related experience.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Chartered accountant</span> Professional designation for accountants

Chartered accountants were the first accountants to form a professional accounting body, initially established in Scotland in 1854. The Edinburgh Society of Accountants (1854), the Glasgow Institute of Accountants and Actuaries (1854) and the Aberdeen Society of Accountants (1867) were each granted a royal charter almost from their inception. The title is an internationally recognised professional designation; the certified public accountant designation is generally equivalent to it. Women were able to become chartered accountants only following the Sex Disqualification (Removal) Act 1919 after which, in 1920, Mary Harris Smith was recognised by the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales and became the first woman chartered accountant in the world.

The Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI) is the World's second largest professional accounting body and largest professional accounting body of India under the ownership of Ministry of Corporate Affairs, Government of India. It was established on 1 July 1949 as a statutory body under the Chartered Accountants Act, 1949 enacted by the Parliament for promotion, development and regulation of the profession of Chartered Accountancy in India.

IFACnet, the KnowledgeNet for Professional Accountants, was the global, multilingual search engine developed by the International Federation of Accountants (IFAC) and its members to provide professional accountants worldwide with one-stop access to good practice guidance, articles, management tools and other resources. This enterprise search engine was launched on October 2, 2006, by INDEZ. Originally marketed to professional accountants in business, IFACnet was expanded in March 2007 to provide resources and information relevant to small and medium accounting practices. In 2014, IFACnet was expanded and replaced by IFAC Knowledge Gateway, providing thought leadership and resources from IFAC and across the accountancy profession.

Accountancy in Hong Kong is regulated by the HKICPA under the Professional Accountants Ordinance. The auditing industry for limited companies is regulated under the Companies Ordinance, and other Ordinances such as the Securities and Futures Ordinance, the Listing Rules, etc.

The Certified Public Accountants Association (CPAA) was formed in 1989 to represent the interests of certain accountants in the United Kingdom.

Uganda Management Institute (UMI) is a government-owned national center for training, research, and consultancy in the field of management and administration in Uganda. It is one of the nine public universities and degree-awarding institutions in the country outside the military.

Multitech Business School (MBS) is a privately owned institution of higher education, which offers degree, diploma and certificate courses in multiple business disciplines, in Uganda. It is recognized by the Uganda National Council for Higher Education, as a private, tertiary degree-awarding institution of higher learning.
