The Institute on Governance (IOG) is a Canadian think-tank focused on developing better governance in the public sphere. [1] The organisation also uses the French title, Institut sur la gouvernance. The IOG is a registered Charity in Canada. [2] [3]
The institute is headquartered in Ottawa. Its mission is to advance better governance by exploring, developing and promoting the principles, standards and practices which underlie good governance in the public sphere. [4] It is governed by a Board of Directors currently chaired by Malcolm Brown. [5] As of 2025, the President and CEO is Allen Sutherland [6] who manages roughly 20 staff plus 30 external associates.
The IOG was founded in 1990 in Ottawa by Timothy Plumptre, who acted as director and president until 2006. Its budget was C$1.5 million and it counted 18 staff in 2003. [7]
Maryantonett Flumian served as IOG president between 2008 and 2018, during which time the IOG expanded beyond its traditional focus in the national capital area into projects in Nova Scotia, Ontario, British Columbia and Nunavut, as well as multiple overseas projects, including a multi-year project in Iraq. [8]
