The International Society for Porous Media (InterPore) is a nonprofit independent scientific organization established in 2008. It aims to advance and disseminate knowledge for the understanding, description, and modeling of natural and industrial porous medium systems. It acts as a platform for researchers active in modeling of flow and transport in natural, biological, and technical porous media, such as soils, aquifers, oil and gas reservoirs, biological tissues, plants, fuel cells, wood, ceramics, concrete, textiles, paper, polymer composites, hygienic materials, food, foams, membranes, etc.

History

In the course of 2006, researchers from the Department of Earth Sciences, Utrecht University and Institute for Modelling Hydraulic and Environmental Systems, University of Stuttgart, under the leadership of Professor Rainer Helmig [1] and Professor Majid Hassanizadeh, respectively, developed a proposal for setting up a joint international graduate research program. The proposal was submitted to German Research Foundation (DFG) and Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research (NWO), and was successfully funded. The research school started its activities on January 1, 2007, under the name NUPUS (Non-linearities and Upscaling in PoroUS Media). This project led to the idea of creating an international center for porous media wherein scientists from diverse disciplines who study porous media could exchange ideas and research activities. The European Society for Porous Media (Europore) was established in Spring, 2008. By Summer 2008, the geographical scope was expanded beyond Europe and the name was changed to the International Society for Porous Media (InterPore.) Bylaws were approved and the society was officially registered in Fall 2008. [2]

InterPore Academy was established in 2020 to promote educational activities mainly to serve industrial and/or younger researchers. The academy is organizing short courses, webinars, and workshops.

National Chapters

National chapters are country-wide activity groups of InterPore. They form platforms for bringing together porous media researchers from academia and industry of a given country or region. A variety of activities, such as porous media workshops, conferences, short courses, are organized by national chapters. National chapters compile a list of porous media companies in their countries to be able to interact with institutions and industries. [3] [4] [5]

InterPore Annual Meetings

InterPore has organized the International Conference on Porous Media annually since 2009. General themes include: fundamentals of porous media; computational challenges in porous media simulation; experimental studies and applications involving porous media. Previous conferences have been hosted by in Fraunhofer ITWM in Kaiserslautern, Germany; Texas A&M University in College Station, Texas, USA; I2M-Dept TREFLE (CNRS, ENSAM, University of Bordeaux), France; Purdue University in West Layfayette, Indiana, USA; Technical University of Prague, Czech Republic; University of Wisconsin, in Milwaukee, USA; University of Padova, Italy; University of Cincinnati, Ohio, USA; Technical University of Delft in Rotterdam, Netherlands; Louisiana State University in New Orleans, USA; Universitat Politecnica de Valencia, Spain; and two online conferences (2020 & 2021. [16] ) InterPore2022 is scheduled for May 30 - June 2, 2022 at Khalifa University in Abu Dhabi, UAE. [17]

Permeability in fluid mechanics and the Earth sciences is a measure of the ability of a porous material to allow fluids to pass through it.

In materials science, a porous medium or a porous material is a material containing pores (voids). The skeletal portion of the material is often called the "matrix" or "frame". The pores are typically filled with a fluid. The skeletal material is usually a solid, but structures like foams are often also usefully analyzed using concept of porous media.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Effective stress</span>

The effective stress can be defined as the stress, depending on the applied tension and pore pressure , which controls the strain or strength behaviour of soil and rock for whatever pore pressure value or, in other terms, the stress which applied over a dry porous body provides the same strain or strength behaviour which is observed at ≠ 0. In the case of granular media it can be viewed as a force that keeps a collection of particles rigid. Usually this applies to sand, soil, or gravel, as well as every kind of rock and several other porous materials such as concrete, metal powders, biological tissues etc. The usefulness of an appropriate ESP formulation consists in allowing to assess the behaviour of a porous body for whatever pore pressure value on the basis of experiments involving dry samples.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Delta Phi Epsilon (professional)</span> American professional fraternity)

Delta Phi Epsilon (ΔΦΕ) or Delta Phi Epsilon Foreign Service Council the largest national American professional foreign service fraternity and sorority. Founded on January 25, 1920, it was the first fraternity dedicated to careers in foreign diplomacy in trade. Its Alpha chapter went on in the first half of the twentieth century to colonize new chapters at many other universities throughout the country, although most chapters went defunct in the latter half of the century. A microporous material is a material containing pores with diameters less than 2 nm. Examples of microporous materials include zeolites and metal-organic frameworks.

SIGDOC is the Special Interest Group on Design of Communication of the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM), an international learned society for computing. ACM SIGDOC was founded in 1975 by Joseph "Joe" T. Rigo.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Majid Hassanizadeh</span>

Seyed Majid Hassanizadeh is a professor of hydrogeology at Utrecht University, where he heads the Hydrogeology group at the Faculty of Geosciences. His research focuses on flow of fluids and transport of solutes and colloids in porous media, through theory development, experimental studies, and modeling work. In particular, he focuses on two-phase flow, reactive transport in variably-saturated porous media, transport of micro-organisms, and biodegradation.

The Centre for Ships and Ocean Structures (CeSOS) is a research centre located at the Marine Technology Centre in Trondheim, Norway. The research centre's goal is to create fundamental knowledge about the design and operation of ships and ocean structures. The centre has been active since 2002, when it was established as a Centre of Excellence (CoE) by the Research Council of Norway and the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU). Although the financing period by the Research Council of Norway finished in 2012, research activities are still ongoing in 2013 and 2014, financed by external means.

The International Science Council (ISC) is an international non-governmental organization that unites scientific bodies at various levels across the social and natural sciences. The ISC was formed with its inaugural general assembly on 4 July 2018 by the merger of the former International Council for Science and the International Social Science Council (ISSC), making it one of the largest organisations of this type.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Pore structure</span>

Pore structure is a common term employed to characterize the porosity, pore size, pore size distribution, and pore morphology of a porous medium. Pores are the openings in the surfaces impermeable porous matrix which gases, liquids, or even foreign microscopic particles can inhabit them. The pore structure and fluid flow in porous media are intimately related.

Øivind Wilhelmsen is a Norwegian professor of physical chemistry at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology in Trondheim (NTNU), Norway. There he is head of the Thermodynamics group and serves as principal investigator at PoreLab, a Center of excellence. His area of research is thermodynamics, with emphasis on non-equilibrium thermodynamics.
